Okay Americans here is the game, you get to decide where our tax dollars are spent, since there is an disagreement on what Taxes should be spent on. So here in our own little world on SH we get to decide what the money is spent on.

Here is are the rules you must chose and you must tell everyone why you made that choice, no insults, "no well you know", no lies allowed.

Here are the choices

It is a difficult question because most all of these choices are what makes a society/country "work". I believe the choice that is the highest priority, bar none, is education. The two that can be looked at with a "jaundiced eye" are military spending and energy subsidies.

It is indeed a question to ponder.

Of sustainable, green, individual and community solar, wind, water catchment and condensation, electric cars, sustainable self-contained housing with personal year round organic green houses for food, recycling, etc. Oooopps! It all exists in droves, right now! So scratch that. I change to Energy Subsidies, because if we don't have to talk about oil anymore, then we have no reason to have have the military conflicts and involvement that we do now, so military spending goes way down, so we'd have more money to address the national debt. We could perfect these systems that already exist for poverty ravaged countries around the world, then we'd have resources to help them live better, for a lot less than it costs us now when we do it. We'd need fewer social programs because people would be more responsible for themselves, and would have to work harder at making that work on a daily basis at their own homes. Then we could spend more money on college education and practical training so we can operate ahead of natural environmental situations and not behind.

After we do that we can destroy big pharmaceutical companies practically, because they, and the mostly ineffective machine that has become health care in this country, are truly our biggest problem, mostly caused by the ...

After we do that we can destroy big pharmaceutical companies practically, because they, and the mostly ineffective machine that has become health care in this country, are truly our biggest problem, mostly caused by the Frankenmeat sources and GMO's. Destroy them, and we'll have plenty of money to do everything we need, because they are trying their best to destroy US daily, so they can make more money. Take away that possibility.

    This is a great question.

I would like to be able to put a percent of my taxes here, and some of it there, etc.

It would be even better if we could get rid of some of the bloated beauracrats that are making these decision now.

There are 'hungry' children out there in this great country of ours, who don't know where their next meal is coming from. Shame, need to help these children w/ more food programs. God Bless the Children.

Though all of things are important. It makes it even harder to choose which is most needed. So I will give it a try. I think that Military spending is most important! Without those brave men and women to protect our wonderful Country who's going to do it? Concerning the debt, I think that this will take some brain-storming and co-operation from all parties involved. Concerning Aid to needy nations is a concern, but I think we need to take care of the home-front first of all. If there is extra funds or supplies to spare then so-be-it. All of these things are needed. Finding away to put them in action is the Big Question!..

I chose R&D; non military, for if the US is to be competitive in the global economy, we have to spend more. In 2011, 20% of our budget went to military spending, and another 20% for Social Security, and another 21% went for Medicare, Medicaid and CHIP. Science and Medical research only got 2% of the budget, and another 2% went for education.

I say cut the military spending in half, and add 5% to R&D;, and another 5% to Education.

Since you went through a lot of trouble to create this poll with all the neat pictures on the choices, aneed2know, I didn't want to vote for the "wimpiest" choice (Undecided). Most of the choices have some merit to them, but I voted for R&D; because the way the private sector companies are regulated and sued, and taxed to death right now, a lot of research that they used to do on their own has been curtailed because it is too costly for them. This deprives us of potential breakthroughs in medical cures, new drug therapies, alternate energy development, mass transportation improvements, etc. When R&D; is subsidized to accelerate discoveries in these areas, the free market will sort out which ones make the most sense for the most people at the times when they occur!

The issues are much too complicated to just pick one. We do need to reduce military spending dramatically but not across the board. Promises were made to people who served in the military and they need to be honored. While I think a 20 year retirement system is unsustainable, we need to create a system that is sustainable while honoring our prior committments. The same is true for all government retirement sytems. They need to be self sustaining. We need subsidies, not for oil, but for renewable energy. Everybody makes a big deal out of the renewable energy company that went bankrupt. Its going to take time. Both Fed EX and Amazon.com ran at a loss for years before becoming profitable. We need to revamp the entire tax system at all levels. Congress can't get that done. The system is broken and I'm not sure how to fix it, but if we don't fix it we are going the way of the Roman Empire.

I would like taxes to be spent towards needed social debts, research and development non-military, college spending, energy subsidies, paying down the debt and finally aide to needy nations if possible.

Take savings from cutting wasteful 60% military spending, and from a tax increase on millionaires and billionaires and reserve it strictly for paying down the debt.

I am not American, so I will answer for Australia, I think that at the moment more taxes should be spent on providing sustainable energy to all people, having solar panels on every roof will cut down living costs dramatically including government costs into energy allowing more tax money to spend on everything else.
Health care and education should be next, having equal opportunities is pivotal for the welfare of future generations.
    then paying off all debt.
    then research and development.
    then social programs.
    then military spending.
    then aide to needy nations.
but none on me, thats just stupid I dont need it.

I don't know. I can't pick just one. It's too complex. I guess the most important would be education and social programs and I know that R&D; probably seems like throwing money in a bottomless hole (and sometimes it probably is) but sometimes the payoff is big (although it may be a 20 or 30 year wait).
