Hebrew National Accused of Not Being Kosher: Believable or Baloney?

Hebrew National, a hot dog manufacturer run by ConAgra Foods, has always been trusted to provide kosher food -- meaning their hot dogs fall under the strictest Jewish dietary laws. But the company is now being sued by consumers who claim their products fail to meet kosher standards. According to American Jewish World, 11 individuals filed complaints against ConAgra and AER Services, a third-party certifier, in May. The case is now moving to federal court.

AER president Shlomoh Ben-David said in an interview, "The allegations in the complaint regarding AER are completely and utterly false. There is no basis for them, and they are without any merit." However, the real issue here is AER's failure to adequately address complaints. A lawyer for the plaintiffs said, "How does a consumer who thinks he is buying kosher meat really know he is buying kosher meat? It's a very, very difficult thing for a consumer to detect, unless someone investigates." Do you think Hebrew National is selling non-kosher products?

I have heard allegations by Orthodox that Hebrew National isn't "kosher enough" for them but I have never heard them say it's not kosher. So I have to assume that the meat is slaughtered in a kosher manner and prepared in a kosher manner, or it wouldn't be considered kosher at all. I would have to read what the company says about it's kosher procedures and who they hire as mashgiot (Rabbi's who certify a product kosher). As Jews we need to give the benefit of the doubt if we don't have all the information.

I believe it is yet another frivolous lawsuit. Corporations are easy targets for unscrupulous lawyers and it does nothing but raise the prices for all of us. When our courts start throwing these lawsuits out, it will be a good thing for everyone.

What would be the point? Not a good business or religious decision. Ritual blessing of food is strange but for those who want it, they should be able to get it.

Whether it is schmultz or hot dogs if it meat and comes from 2 different critters and is in the same dish it cannot be kosher in my tradition.

they're all beef hotdogs, though. How will it come from two different critters? Are you saying two different cows? sorry, I'm not fully informed on what constitutes kosher.

It's a frivolous suit. Hebrew National has more beef texture than the Eckridge Farm beef sausage i bought last night and eating the rest right now. Maybe they need to go- better yet, i need to go file a suit against Eckridge for false product. doesn't even list the ingredients on the package.

I am not Jewish nor do I pretend to know a whole lot about them nor do I really want to or give a damn one way or the other, BUT. . . . I always thought that Kosher meats consisted of meat gained from animals that had been prayed over by the rabbi BEFORE it was killed. That being the extent of it, I would say ConAgra sells a lot of meat that is NOT prayed over by the rabbi.

Kosher means that the animal was killed a certain way and the meat cleaned of blood and veins, then disinfected with salt. Kosher hot dogs contain better cuts of meat.

It's really fishy that there is such complaints-how would they know they wern't kosher?

It does sound like something the Jewish nation's Muslim enemies would think of to do to them.

After all, Osama bin Laden thought of the way to begin de-railing the world's economy, stripping the finances from the nations, & it's worked. Too bad Obama didn't think of something to stop it happening in our country, when he got elected-he went along with it!

Hebrew National should counter-sue for it being a frivelous lawsuit.

To laugh & scorn something to make it look frivelous, is one way of taking away from the truth-across the board. I put what I said out there, because it is exactly what i said-Israel's enemies could do something like that. If it's true-who knows? what if it was true? Bin Laden broke the world's economy, so breaking a Hebrew kosher company financially, is something right up their ally.

And Israel is our allie-although Odumbo doesn't seem to know that-he's too busy bowing to the Arab's.

Even when Times are Well, folks still con or cheat. Heard of a survey some time ago that said over 80% of MBA students cheat on their exams so this culture is (by now) ingrained within the Boardrooms.
