Hebrew National Accused of Not Being Kosher: Believable or Baloney?

Hebrew National, a hot dog manufacturer run by ConAgra Foods, has always been trusted to provide kosher food -- meaning their hot dogs fall under the strictest Jewish dietary laws. But the company is now being sued by consumers who claim their products fail to meet kosher standards. According to American Jewish World, 11 individuals filed complaints against ConAgra and AER Services, a third-party certifier, in May. The case is now moving to federal court.

AER president Shlomoh Ben-David said in an interview, "The allegations in the complaint regarding AER are completely and utterly false. There is no basis for them, and they are without any merit." However, the real issue here is AER's failure to adequately address complaints. A lawyer for the plaintiffs said, "How does a consumer who thinks he is buying kosher meat really know he is buying kosher meat? It's a very, very difficult thing for a consumer to detect, unless someone investigates." Do you think Hebrew National is selling non-kosher products?

That's probably better. I feel like I shouldn't eat the more intelligent animals. Too much like canibalism. Although I do eat beef on rare occasions.
I can't imagine how people who have ever looked in a dogs eye could eat one.

Hot dogs are made with pork, or beef or both or turkey or chicken or even venison. But Kosher will not contain pork, for sure.

Fifty years ago I think hot dogs by tradition were still made only from pork.

If someone takes a deer and makes hot dogs from some of it, they have to add about 25% pork to get the right texture and taste. But they ain't bad. They make a lot of Venison sausages here In Iowa but they always add pork to all of the different Items. What ever the end product happens to be, it is great tasting. I think you are right about pork being the only option 50 years ago.

I had chicken last night. As a card carrying DDAL member I feel guilty about eating more intelligent mamals.

Doris Day, at age 88, has just had to release previously un published songs. She was broke. (guess she had to support the DDAL office staff when the depression drained contributions.)

I really don't care because I'm not a Jew. However, I can tell you they make great hot dogs.

I say let the investigation move forward and let the chip fall where they may. If consumers are paying for Kosher products, then they should be getting exactly what they purchased.

Yes, I do - if you would like one of the best tasting hot dogs you can get at a supermarket. While I did at one time really like hot dogs, in the last couple years I have preferred beef brats or Polish sausage with chopped onions and a little mustard on a good roll. My wife used to like to buy hot dogs for the kids, but I told her if they weren't Hebrew Nationals, don't make any for me.

Johnsonville smoked Brats is pretty good quality, and too me, makes a sandwich that is hard to tell from a good hotdog. The only thing better would be to add some chili.

I hate to think it, but all is possible in the marketplace today....I am not Jewish, so it is not so much of an issue for in that regard...but I do believe in truth in advertising...and if it truly is not as advertised...then it must be corrected...and admitted.

I actually think they are very good hotdogs....better than some of the others...

Personally I don't care if they are Kosher or not. I am not Jewish but these are the only hotdogs that I can eat without getting sick to my stomach.

I am not Jewish; And I do like hotdogs, especially on the grill, so I've been looking for something a little more healthy, than the regular hotdog.

Nor exactly news. "Kosher" gelatin has long been included and allowed from the much much cheaper porcine sources.

There are processing plants whose only claim to halacha is a short nod and blessing by a Rabbi- http://www.oukosher.org/index...

The last paragraph contains the pertinent info.

I hope for the baloney, but if this is true, then I expect one of the other two Kosher certifying organizations will get them back on track.

Great dogs, with a great history.

ConAgra Foods had a peanut butter scare a few years back. It's very possible they may have problems with their hot dogs, I sure hope not...

It better not be true, or they will lose thousands of loyal customers and eventually their business. You can't recover from something like that.

A business is a business. Its life mission is to maintain itself by making as much money possible while spending as little possible to produce it. The only human element to a business are the people who buy it.
