When I was young and poor making my way in the world alone. The food stamps used to be actual paper, I would pay 25 cents on the dollar to people who would sell them for various reasons. I knew it wasn't right and I feel ashamed thinking back on it, but, at the time I felt compelled by hunger, I was literally eating a single pack of Ramen noodles to carry me through a full day at work and a small bowl of rice with pepper before I went to bed, when I bought the food stamps, I could actually buy a small pack of meat and some fruits and veggies.

I don't plan on ever using them, but if it was absolutely necessary, I would. ...I saw on television a man who'd lost his job after decades of good honest employment. He avoided welfare as much as he could because he wasn't going to take a hand out. Eventually, he had to take it in order to live.

Used them when I was paying my way through college with the help of a loan that I paid off within 3 years after graduation with a Masters of Science in Microbiology with minor in Biochemistry

I have never used food stamps before, and now that I am currently unemployed, I (a liberal Democrat) still haven't applied for them although I qualify for them. However, three of my Republican friends (a moderate, a conservative, and a tea partier) have all told me that I should apply for them. Have a nice day. :)

I have, and it was a horrible experience and would rather eat things from under rocks in the woods than do it again. The welfare system is set up horribly. Besides that its so shameful to accept food stamps, or to walk into a food store and have to swipe and EBT card. It was humiliating. If I am ever for some reason that poor again, I'd rather starve to death.

No what's sinking low is the types of people on the welfare system. Everyone I met that is on it refuses to work and decided to just use the system for all they can get.

Also I'm sorry if you think its low that I have pride and actually care about trying in life and supporting myself rather than take handouts from a corrupt system.

I apologize. I misunderstood what you were saying. Yes, abusing the system is one thing. But yes, where I live, you can work and get food stamps. Not as many as when you're unemployed, but every little bit helps.

I don't really like your choices. You make it sound like everyone has the choice to either take government assistance or not, and one of them makes Americans that do have Food Stamps, or have had them before, are little more than free-loaders. I'm sure there are people that would LOVE not to rely on this POS government simply just to live. Maybe if we didn't have two low-lives in a row in Office, this wouldn't be a problem.

And those are the kinds of people who I'm talking about who abuse the system and should not be on welfare or be getting food stamps. It should only be for those who truly need it.
