Have We Given Up on Israel?

What was that old Malcolm X line about how if you don’t stand for something you’re gonna fall for anything?

Well, just as the Obama administration was folding like a house of cards on the tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires that the Republican party insisted on, The New York Times wrote about how the White House was also tossing in its hand on the prospect of Middle East peace talks.

After insisting that Israel impose a 90-day construction freeze on Jewish settlements, an administration official confirmed that the U.S. had walked out of three weeks of go-nowhere talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the subject.

Since the Palestinians have refused to engage in direct negotiations without the moratorium, Middle East peace talks are now in limbo and the U.S. is left without a strategy for getting the two sides back to the table.

The decision to pull the plug on the effort came as officials said they weren’t convinced that even Netanyahu could persuade his cabinet to accept a freeze – which hadn’t happened yet – and even if he did, they weren’t sure it would push the ball forward.

“We made a strong effort, and everyone tried in good faith to resume direct negotiations in a way that would be meaningful and sustainable,” a senior American official said. “But the extension wasn’t actually going to do that.”

Seemingly lacking a plan B, the failure was yet another setback on the international front for an administration still scrambling to do damage control in the wake of the WikiLeaks dump containing damaging diplomatic communiqués. The new direct negotiations were launched with much fanfare in September by President Obama, but since the initial meetings by the two sides then, Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas have not sat down together again.

Analysts pointed at Netanyahu’s weak coalition as the prime reason for the failure to achieve launch on the negotiations, but the Palestinians were also faulted for changing their initial position to include a settlement building freeze in East Jerusalem as well as the West Bank.

Do you think the U.S. has given up on Palestinian peace talks?

We haven't given up on Israel. We've given up on Obama.

Natanyahu is a competent leader. Obama is a naive fool, surrounded by other naive fools who live in an echo chamber of idealistic secular fantasies.
Netanyahu will protect Israel from the Islamic killers sworn to annihilate Israel. Obama's administration is an echo-chamber of left-wing idealism - ignorant of Islamic totalitarianism.

Natanyahu is correct to disregard our incompetent leadership's advice. We should consider ourselves fortunate that a serious leader is on watch in Israel while America suffers through four years of left-wing foolishness.

I'm sure Obama would dearly love for this nation to reject Israel.
However, no matter how much it bothers him, this is STILL a Christian nation, who loves everything about the Word of God.
And, in God's Word, we are told that He will bless those, who bless Israel.
If Obama had spent as much time studying the Word, as he did studying everything he didn't study, he'd have known that his actions will not only destroy his legacy but also come close to destroying the nation.

I think he'll fail in that, as well, because PRAYER CHANGES THINGS and he has all those Christians, he didn't notice, praying for Israel -- i.e. - praying against his plans!!

What a christaholic! We are not now nor have we ever been a "chirstian" nation. Learn your damn history. Read the writings of the great freethinking founders. At most the majority of the founders were "Deist" not "christian" and many were in fact agnostic! Read the "Treaty of Tripoli".

    - Authored by American diplomat Joel Barlow in 1796, the following treaty was sent to the floor of the Senate, June 7, 1797, where it was read aloud in its entirety and unanimously approved. John Adams, having seen the treaty, signed it and proudly proclaimed it to the Nation.

Art. 11. As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquillity, of Mussulmen; and, as the said States never entered into any war, or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties, that no pretext arising from religious opinions, shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.

Funny thing is that many, if not most, US Jews, more particularly younger people, do not support the Far-Right Israeli government. That's why the pro-Netanyahu US Jewish organizations are waging a ferocious war against J Street, which supports both israel and a peaceful settlement between Israel and Palestine.

It's sweet that all these young Jews support a "peaceful settlement between Israel and Palestine". Sweet and quite naive. Unfortunately it takes two to make peace. Where is the Palestinian version of JStreet?

    Your question: I don't know.
What I know is that more and more Israeli Jews are leaving the country, many of them go to the US. They are fed up with the far-right policies of the Israeli government.
BTW, JStreet in Europe is known as JCall.

    OK, let's compare:
    1. Israelis are building in disputed territories. They did that in the Sinai after 1967 but that did not stop the Egyptians from signing a peace agreement though. Whatever the Israelis built that was in what was to be Egypt's land became Egypt's property.
    2. Palestinains are lobbing rockets and mortars at Israeli towns daily. Recently a pregnant woman and her friends were ambushed and shot to death in cold blood. Palestinains leaders called it a "victory" and had a Victory Party in the streets of Gaza.

Now you tell me which is a bigger hindrance to peace.

The very fact that a violent confrontation between anyone is evidence of idol worship. Jesus wants us to be one in love, and any war keeps whoever from being one in love. Think about that..

So jesus was/is love you say, wrong!

    Matthew 10:34-36 (King James Version)

34 - Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.

35 - For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

36 - And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.

Read your own book and you'll see for yourself, the god of Abraham and jesus is a vengeful, masochistic, murdering tyrant.

Where's the love if he's pitting father against daughter; daughter against mother; daughter in law against mother in law? This idiot, as told in the myth anyway, told his own deciles to leave and abandon their own families in order to follow him.

Christaholics hate anybody that is not another christaholic. Same with the other idiotic religious cults including Islam, Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism, et al.

Hate is way for the Abrahamic religions PERIOD!

The sword is the sword of the spirit does not seek blood ,but humans without the spirit will seek blood.

The sword of the spirit is not the same one peter used to slice of the ear of the priest. The sword of the spirit who is Jesus who was Betrayed by a kiss that day.

There was war, and upheaval on this planet long before Jesus who is God came here, and all were lost body, and soul. That is why he came, and he was different. What do you expect to happen, and when he came? Humans had to make a choice to follow Jesus who was loving peace or continue to be the way they were before Jesus came to live among men.
Jesus is jealous of our happiness, and the sooner you realize that the sooner you will stop emulating the accuser who is Satan.

Jesus came so humans have a choice, and that will cause humans to chose sides .Even mother, and daughter father, and son. I would hope they could all be saved.

I hate no one,and in fact am being altruistic in fighting for the rights for gays, furries of the furry fandom to post whatever they want on Youtube, and elsewhere, and have representations of sexual organs on their furry suits too, and zoosexual rights, and pedophiles to no longer be tormented too. The religions you dislike are the same I dislike as well. The Christians are the once who don't boast of the name.

That is why those religions with the name give them without the name such a hard time.

    Many Americans have not.

Not a question about pusillanimous 0bama "giving up" on Israel--he was raised to hate the US and all democracies (including Israel, the only one between the Med and Laccadive Seas) by his mum, and further reinforced in this hate by his mentor Bill Ayers. His bowing to the degenerate monarch Abdullah (of Saudi Arabia) and the figurehead monarch of US' former foe Japan only showed this.

GW Bush also loved Saudi Arabia, what would the US do without Saudi oil?
  • srini JCD aka... 2010/12/13 19:17:04

Newsflash--over 40% of oil imported into US is Canuck (much more than the fraction from the degenerate kingdom), a substantial portion of that from AB/SK tar-sands which have over quintuple the reserves of the ENTIRE Muddle East (unknown how much from Newfoundland's Hibernia--but between Tar-sands and Hibernia, absolutely no need for Muddle East).

US can easily fill cent-percent of its energy-needs (INCLUDING nuclear--SK and MB have second-largest reserves of Uranium, exceeded only by Australia) from its northern neighbour. And logistics (maximum distance to transport oil to US territory is Hibernia to Portland, ME--less than 1,000 miles; Fort McMurray to Sweetgrass, MT--about 600, and doable CONTINUOUSLY by pipleline; contrast to Muddle East over 7,000 miles including some high-risk zones).

    Hello!

Provincial abbreviations: AB = Alberta ("my" Province), SK = Saskatchewan, MB = Manitoba

    Thank you.
America also imports oil from Mexico.
But if America does not really need Middle-Eastern oil, why are the US leaders so close to the Saudi Arabia kingdom, which finances Islamic extremists?

Yes, we funded, armed and trained al Qaeda. They happened to be combating our sworn enemy, the USSR at the time. Cold War politics was "my enemy's enemy is my friend".
I would be delighted if all the aggression ended as well. Unfortunately it is all tied to oil which we still need. Bin Laden made clear that having US Troops so close to Mecca was the root cause of his actions. (1996 fatwa) Why did we have troops in Saudi Arabia? To protect the Royal family who's good graces we need in order to keep oil cheep.
Israel is not the problem in the Middle East. In fact it is a blessing for the rulers of Arab countries there. By getting their people riled up about those 'wicked Zionists' they keep them distracted from the inadequacies of their own leaders.
The recent Wikileaks documents show that Arab leaders are far more concerned about Iran and actually would LOVE Israel to take care of them.
