    Well, the definition is a bit wrong-- the neocons are NOT liberal; they are the far right wing of the conservative party.They are, however, a very real threat to the GOP-- and will drive away the moderates and centrists that make up the majority of the Republican Party.

    The moderates and centrists (aka paleoconservatives) will defect from the GOP and either start a new Party (like they did with the Reform Party) or will add strength to 3rd Party groups like the Libertarian Party or the Constitution Party.

    I don't think the party was destroyed, it just suffered a loss in the election, because of two things: the perception that they misled the country about the reasons for going into Iraq, and the more positive message that Obama campaigned on. They merely became the minority party. They weren't destroyed. However, this loss seems to have been a source of complete overreaction for them: they are reading too much into why they lost, and the neocons have convinced them that they need to change the party. But it will backfire.
