Happy VJ Day Americans: How will you celebrate?

Political Pirate August 14, 2009 18:26:50

Happy VJ day to all Americans. VJ day celebrates Victory over Japan, ending World War II. VJ day is about celebrating the day Japan surrendered in WWII. Rhode Island still keeps the VJ day, or Victory Day, tradition alive... celebrating the second Monday of August.

August 15th, 1945 was when the emperor announced that Japan would accept the terms of the Postdam Declaration.

I will celebrate VJ day the same way I celebrate Memorial Day, Armistice Day (aka Veterans Day), and most days actually, thinking of the futile victimization of the dead and the depredation of living. Wars should be avoided although there ALWAYS arises a good reason to soak oneself in these testosterone heavy contests. Even if you win, you lose.

With all that is going on in my life I didn't realize it was V-J Day. That anniversary has lost significance over the last 64 years for several reason especially since most of the people who were around then are no longer with us. However, we as a society should not forget what happened back then. It is a good thing, however, that the US and Japan has for the most part reconciled it's differences and hatred towards each other.

Now that Japan has been a staunch ally for decades, what's the point? Celebrating Armed Forces Day and Veterans' Day, plus Memorial Day observances, as well as contributing to veterans' assistance organizations should suffice.

Not a "holiday" worth remembering. Great we won, but we killed a ton of people doing so. I'll just cry myself to sleep tonight.....
