Kudos to the RNC for
this; they have really been on top of their game during this election.
Obama is far superior in the incredibly unimportant ‘likability’
category, but the Republican party has continually used humor, wit, and
passion to downplay the effectiveness of the President’s often
misleading messages.

1) Role of money - Citizens United is a destructive ruling and even before that politicians by necessity were too focused on fund raising for their next election. This crazy crap doesn't happen anything like this in other democracies and I love the parliamentary system where election seasons are only rarely predictable and then happen QUICKLY for 6 or so weeks.
2) The INTERNET and media fragmentation - CBS, NBC and ABC and the national news services used to do a reasonably good job providing REAL fair and balanced information with NO view to attracting advertising revenue. That environment has changed to a zillion different media outlets micro-targeting the left or the right and on the web even more delineated between Neo Cons, Tea Baggers, Liberals, Progressives, etc... so each person can seek out the media that reinforces ONLY what they believe.
3) Perhaps as a byproduct of the 2 above 'compromise' and bi-partisanship' have become labels to defeat incumbents in primary fights (particularly on the right but I believe this is also starting on the left.) Politics IS the art of compromise and I don't mean Representative Richard Mourdock's idea ...

What's are the answers?
1) Comprehensive electoral reform that may actually have to involve a constitutional amendment based on this court's rulings.
2) Require independent 1 hour nightly news broadcasts without advertising on broadcast networks in exchange for their use of the public airwaves. Require a fixed percentage of their revenues to be directed to independent news divisions.
3) Ultimately is a Parliamentary structure a better solution? That would take further debate but there are definite advantages that structurally reduce deadlock and may support multi-party system.
Nothing like attacking the messenger.
