Half-Assed Media Speculation About the Batman Shooter: Do You Trust the Media to Report Tragedy?

The news media loves a tragedy. People tune in to watch. Television news, in particular, benefits from its live coverage instead of its in-depth, thoughtful analysis. The TV news only has to show pictures or a live feed of a crime scene to attract millions of viewers. The written media criticizes mass media for its "half-assed reporting." What do you think?

REASON.COM reports:
Undeterred by how wrong they got the Columbine shootings 13 years ago, or how disgustingly politicized they turned Jared Loughner's 2011 rampage, the humans who work for and talk with journalistic outlets are again rushing to speculative judgment about Jim Holmes, the suspected Batman murderer in Aurora, Colorado.

I am feeling down due to the tragedy in Aurora, Colorado.

A dozen people are dead. Scores more are injured. Lives have been irrevocably altered. My heart goes out to them.

I feel a strange connection to this tragedy. Batman is important to me. I know that the character is a work of fiction, but it is still something that I care about and am passionate about. Someone took something that should have served as a source of inspiration and escapism, and turned it into something ugly.

As another fan has observed, if Batman stands for anything at all, it is that out of tragedy can come greatness. Let’s be greater.

For me, turning it into any sort of characiture is wrong. It's a buzz phrase and disrespects and devalues the gravity of the situation.

to a certain extent... they may get some facts wrong from time to time in order to "deliver the news first"... but they always correct themselves and try the best they can to give you the most information about a breaking news story.

A reporter with ABC already jumped the gun by suggesting that a 'Jim Holmes' from a Tea Party web site may have been the shooter. In a fair and balanced media environment Brian Ross would be SO fired today.

I was watching GMA this morning and all I heard "it could have been..." or "maybe it was...". It soon became clear the whole show was going to be a guessing game so I shut it off. Waste of time and a public dis-service. :-(

The media wants sensationalism, not truth.

Sensationalism means their ratings grow-- which means more money for the networks.

TRUTH, however, means a DROP in ratings.

    Follow the $$$$$$.

News Organizations make mistakes but correct them....ABC said: Editor’s Note: An earlier ABC News broadcast report suggested that a Jim Holmes of a Colorado Tea Party organization might be the suspect, but that report was incorrect. ABC News and Brian Ross apologize for the mistake, and for disseminating that information before it was properly vetted.

Actually what they wanted they got, after that comment, it hit the net it was a tea party person, so now the liberals will run with that and no matter what truth comes out, Liberals don't operate on truth so to them it's now a fact.

You are an imcompetent journalist if you don't vet it before it's broadcasted. So what do you suppose made this journalist look up Tea Party members? He's biased, that's why. He wanted to pin it on them. Glad this worthless journalist got caught with his head up his ass, now his viewers at least know that he incompetent.
