Two months after his defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte's
colonial forces, Jean-Jacques Dessalines proclaims the independence of
Saint-Domingue, renaming it Haiti after its original Arawak name.

    In retrospect, maybe independence wasn't such a good idea. That country just doesn't seem to be doing all that well.

    if they were smart, they shouldve stayed a french colony. Napoleons gone, but a little over a century, your country is in vast ruin. smart.

    Given that poor countries horrible history since independence, maybe it and it's people might have been better off staying with the French. Sometimes "better the devil you know" is a reasonable adage by which to live.
