I put expensive things in the hotel general safe and the rest I carry with me. I'd add a lock to my luggage if I had something moderately valuable.

I do a fair share of traveling and do much feel very secure in strange surroundings especially in foreign countries full of opportunistic people. It's not really their fault though, they are just products of their third world culture in most cases.

Inside lock, and a door wedge alarm that I carry when I travel. Whether or not I use the room safe depends on the safe itself. If it's controlled by key card, then I won't use it. If they can pop the key-carded door, they can pop the key-carded safe. Same thing if it's a set, non-user-changeable lock. If the hotel has the combo, the thief could have it as well since most theft is by staff.

I've actually had strangers come into my room with a key, so the lock is on at all times.
We no longer travel with expensive items either.

But seriously, if my valuables disappear the hotel is liable. Most of them have security cameras anyway so they could see someone walking into my room and leaving it with a laptop or something.

I've never been paranoid about this kind of stuff. My parents never brought anything of value with us on a trip and when we did we would always take it with us.

If I had anything really valuable I would do that or get the desk to keep it in their safe. I had an iPod touch stolen from a hotel room once and I learned my lesson. :(

They can kick the thing open. Of course that makes noise. I spent a week&ahalf at one, and I was the only one at the back of the building. I saw drug deals, crap goin on in the hallway. It was a cheap motel w/ a good national name. I slept w/ my pistol, (loaded). And took it with me ea. day when I went to work. I kept it locked in the vehicle. Parked where I could see it in a security fenced parking lot. When I got off work, I returned to motel and took pistol in room w/ me. Same routine at home, everyday, always. Carry 24/7. I feel partially undressed with out it.

Well that explains it. I have no inclination to stay at a cheap motel in a bad location.
