No, this isn't a highway shootout story. Just a really irresponsible guy with a loaded gun in his car.
A 23-year-old man reportedly shot himself in the leg with a .410 Taurus Judge revolver on Wednesday while driving on a Tennessee highway.
MSNBC writes that he called police "wailing in pain" and asking for medical attention. When police arrived, they found Justin Newberry pulled up to the highway medium with a bullet just above his left ankle.
It went clean through his right thigh.
According to police reports, Newberry's gun slid out from under his seat after he slammed hard on the brakes -- and then he accidentally pulled the trigger when he reached down to pick it up.
Cops also found marijuana and "drug paraphernalia" in his vehicle, and The Daily Mail notes he had "multiple forms of identification," making the man's identity somewhat questionable.
He's said to be in stable condition, but the police do have criminal charges pending against him.
Hopefully next time he'll remember where the trigger is when he picks up his gun.
The incident brings up an interesting side of the gun control debate, which is keeping loaded guns in your vehicle. Freak accidents like this don't happen often, but it's frightening when they do, and it makes many question the circumstances.
Should this guy have been able to keep a loaded gun under his seat like that in the first place?

No.
How absurd.
"Do guns scare you?"
"No, guns have their uses. Idiots with guns scare me."
This idiot should've never had a gun to begin with. However, I don't care how strict the requirements are, even if guns are only given to military and law enforcement officers, you can't screen out all the morons.
Sounds like the guy was lucky and had that Judge loaded with a .45 round though... because he'd've been in a lot more pain if he had a .410 shell or a PDX round in it. Although, I'm not sure how you could manage to pull the trigger of a Judge without realizing it... it takes quite a bit of pressure to fire one of those suckers.
As for knowing about the Judge specifically, my ex owns one, and I was determined to learn everything I could about it. Since the idiot who managed to shoot himself in the leg had only one bullet lodged in him, it could only be a .45 round he had in it, as .410, .410 magnum, and PDX rounds all have several BB's, and in the case of the PDX rounds, they have three slugs to go with it.
I also fired it a few times, but found it to be a handgun that was too large in both size and caliber for me. As to how that man managed to shoot himself "accidentally" when the gun would've had to be a considerable distance off the floorboard of the car to put a bullet through his thigh and into the opposite ankle, is beyond me.
I dated, years ago, a girl who's father was a gun dealer [legal, lol]... I've shot muzzle-loader pistols and rifles, old Thompson's ["Tommy guns"], an Uzi or two, a Herrit [sp?] and more...
And I completely agree with you... the First, Second, Fifteenth and Nineteenth Amendments are my favorites... and I am 110% for the citizen's right to bear arms.
Edit: And to reply to your original comment, I know that everyone has the responsibility to protect themselves and their loved ones from criminals, and it's also why I will never give up my firearms. As you said, we wouldn't be able to protect ourselves from criminals without them.
" IF " the gun were NOT cocked ( Double Action Mode ) it would take a noticable effort to pull the trigger through , revolving the cylinder , cocking the hammer and firing the weapon . THIS COULD HAVE " NOT " HAVE HAPPENED WITH THE GUN IN THE HOLSTER . " IF IT WERE COCKED " , it could have went off with a touch of the trigger ( Single Action ) . In this case the guy was a MORON !
The VAST MAJORITY of people who carry legally are NOT STUPID like this clown . It is Clearly His Own Fault !
MOST people with a C.C.W. receive training and the card is issued by your local sheriff . ( some states do not ) .
