For those of you that disagree... tell that to the school children and teachers that were killed at Sandy Hook. Oh, that is right, you can't. They are dead. Remember that.

The Oklahoma bomber killed hundreds with fertilizer. People will always find ways to kill people, and the weapon they use will change, but the number and the reasons will never change. Hell, even when we made assault weapons illegal, they were still used in Columbine. We need to encourage changes in the way we see self-defense, mental illness, and our policies in how to take care of children in schools. How can we claim we have the best interests of children in mind when our shooter policy is no different than the 50's policy on nuclear bombs. We must end the modern duck in place policy.

So... the only thing left to do now is make sure guns are not available to those that should be in mental institutions.
How do we do that since they are free to walk around?
What makes it convenient to kill, is the mind of a person that has never been taught, or bothered to understand the value OF life.
I remember the 70s quite well.
The was NO "gun control", there were guns, there was violence.....But slaughter on a large scale has been a development that began in the 80s.
Y'see the people committing violence in the 70s, were people who grew up in the 50s. Fights were still done with fists, and you didn't have to kill a man to win.
Also going back to cultural influences, the 60s and 70s produced very little music that reinforced the concept of life as disposable.
The 80s began a WAVE of cultural influence from people who refered to women as
"b!tches" in casual conversation....and "bustin a cap in someone's @ss" was how problems were solved.
The guns have ALWAYS been here.
But the mindset....has not. That's new......and that's what makes killing convenient.
That one, plus a couple from that time period, versus COUNTLESS examples from the 80s on.
However, as far as gun control, I don't believe it would be worth it because it wouldn't work. Yeah, I don't believe it's necessary for someone to own a gun except for hunting or a small handgun for self-protection, but gun control laws probably would work as well as the drug laws in place do. In other words, guns could be outlawed, but then you'd have illegal gun trades going on. People seem to have this romantic idea of "if we outlaw it, it'll go away," but that's simply not the case in any fashion.
However, one thing I believe could help is controlling who GETS guns (which I believe could be based off of mental stability) rather than the guns themselves, but that isn't foolproof either since someone who wants a gun and can't get one can just take someone else's.
In the grand scheme of things, guns can cause many problems like the horrible tragedy that happened this past Friday, but gun control laws themselves aren't going to completely stop it. They can prevent it, yeah, but they can't stop it.
Almost all other Western countries have gun control laws (generally not a total ban), and they also have far lower intentional homicide rates.

Still, I have problems with the info given in these tables.
- Luxembourg (total population: 400,000) has an average murder rate of around 2-2.5.
- Handguns are supposed to be "allowed" in France. That is true only in very rare cases, when the person's life is seriously threatened. I could never obtain a permit to carry or even own a handgun.
- even in countries with a fairly high percentage of "households with guns", you can own a gun only if you are a licensed hunter (my son is one).
- some countries have a tradition of joining shooting clubs, but again, gun owners must be registered, and for instance in Switzerland, I just read that you are only allowed to own one weapon.
- Swiss males are required to serve each year in the Army (three weeks), and to keep their Army rifle at home. Not allowed to carry them to the local Migros supermarket!
