Teachers train as career educators because they want to help kids learn. They anticipate the daily needs of working with youngsters aside from the standard curriculum. Every teacher practices for fire and natural disaster emergencies. Sadly, today's times require defense against violent attacks in our public schools.
Laws promote campuses without guns. Kids can barely play with toy guns or make gestures with their fingers that resemble pretend guns. Criminals prey upon disarmed victims. Would arming teachers -- only those who are willing, of course -- deter crimes against innocent children?
Should schools encourage teachers who want to carry weapons for defense? Should the schools offer training? Should the teachers' unions push to protect their members by allowing them to arm themselves?

+14I see no reason that teachers should not be armed and know how and when to use those arms just like any other American citizen under the Constitution.
All the nagging, whining & complaining over the years by secular liberals!
No disciplining of children in school. No prayer or God allowed in schools. No common sense allowed in schools. No respect of ones bodies or control of sexuality allowed in schools.
No control of generally teaching kids to be respectful, self reliant & responsible for their owns actions.
What has it got us??
Fatherless children dependent upon the big government, rape, low self respect & now armed teachers in schools!
I applaud you liberals for your fabulous contributions to our future & society as a whole.......bow.
p.s. I'm not counting all the politicians who want to ban firearms and have their own private security. They shouldn't be allowed to vote ban, unless they get rid of their armed guards.
And the key words here are WILLing teachers. I don't know about other folks but if I heard that school shootings happen, and I have a teacher who was quite willing to carry a pistol to help defend me while I was in class? Oh hell yea I would be cool with that.
That's a teacher I could respect, and it's not respect earned by force, it's respect earned by what they're willing to do for their charges.
in educating children not becoming profeceint in carrying a gun. that is like asking a trained soldeir to educate kids in three easy lessons, the idea is absurd. this is a very complex problem which requires more than one solution.
what would help not cure the problem but would help is banning assualt weapons
extended clips and closing the loop holes in private gun shows. people can still have hand guns and hunting rifles. there right to carry a gun will not taken away. only certain weapons
that nobody needs.

You also can't tell me that all legal gun owners are "stable" individuals. What if a parent doesn't trust their kid's Kindergarten teacher to be around their child with a gun?
the owner of the gun may have been perfectly stable [though why she felt the need to own a few semi-automatic weapons begs that question, but we can let that go for now.]
her SON, otoh, was obviously NOT stable. and he had access to those guns. the rest is history.
and children, ranging in age from 5 to 18, would have access to the guns in their classrooms. yes, indeed. accidents would happen.
or, if a couple of teenaged boys with a grudge decided to shoot up the school, we provide them the guns to do it.
what a great idea THAT is.
