Gov. Jan Brewer: Obama Admin’s Response to Ruling on Arizona Immigration Law Is All About the Election

Following the Supreme Court’s ruling on the Arizona immigration law, Governor Jan Brewer has instructed police agencies to start immediately enforcing the law’s provision that allows police to check the immigration status of people they stop whom they suspect may be in the US illegally.

On America’s Newsroom, Brewer said that to her it’s clear that the “heart” of the bill was upheld by the nation’s highest court, but claimed that the Department of Homeland Security’s directive to officials not to help Arizona police enforce the law was “disgraceful.”

Brewer addressed criticism that the law’s provision leads to racial profiling, saying, “The people that want to go down that path are wrong. We believe in the rule of law … and it’s unlawful to racial profile. I took extreme steps to make sure that that wouldn’t happen.”

“It’s a sad day when they want to bait everybody because that is their comeback – it’s racial profiling,” she said.

Brewer believes that the administration’s reaction to the ruling all comes down to politics. “He’s looking for that large Hispanic vote,” she said.
