GOP Congressman: Police Should Target Muslims Because They're Responsible For 90 Percent Of Terrorism

ProudProgressive 2012/06/23 03:15:07
The wave of ignorant Islamophobia that the Right Wing has spread across our nation has been relatively quiet in recent weeks, probably because the Right is devoting it's time to pursuing witch hunts against Eric Holder or trying to explain the gaffe of the day from their latest "standard bearer" Mitt Romney. Not to worry. NY Rep Peter King is keeping the flames of hatemongering alive.

Article excerpt follows:

GOP Congressman: Police Should Target Muslims Because They're Responsible For 90 Percent Of Terrorism
By Eli Clifton
Jun 22, 2012

Rep. Peter King (R-NY) has a long history of demonizing American Muslims. So it's no great surprise that his hearing earlier this week on the radicalization of Muslims fell under attack as both a waste of time — Rep. Hansen Clarke (D-MI) commented that his time would be better spent discussing how to protect water resources for his constituents — and yet another example of King congratulating himself for his previous hearings attacking Muslims. But appearing on Fox News yesterday, King continued his factually challenged attack on Muslim Americans:

What I am very concerned about is that while the overwhelming majority of Muslims are good people, the fact is even though Muslims are 1 percent of the population, almost 90 percent of the terrorist crimes are carried out by the Muslim community. And there are not enough people in the community willing to step forward and speak out against this and cooperate with law enforcement.

While the scope of King's assertion is unclear, the reality is that a small percentage of terrorist attacks and plots in the U.S. are the result of Islamic extremism — 56 percent have been perpetrated by right-wing extremists, 30 percent by ecoterrorists and 12 percent by Islamic extremists:

dfgdgdfgdfgdfg

And King's claim that Muslims are simply unwilling to pushback against extremism appears to be refuted by recent reports of aspiring Muslims terrorists finding difficulty in raising funds in New York. Last year, a Gallup poll found that Muslim Americans are more likely (89 percent) to reject violence than any other U.S. religious group and nearly all Muslim Americans (92 percent) have no sympathy for al-Qaeda.

King also claimed that "it's so important that the NYPD focus on [the Muslim community]. That's why it's important that the NYPD and law enforcement not give into political correctness." But that claim ignores the FBI's concerns about the NYPD's surveillance of Muslim businesses, Mosques and student groups in New York and New Jersey.

FBI Newark Special Agent in Charge Michael Ward complained in March that the NYPD's spying was making the FBI's job harder, telling reporters, "It's starting to have a negative impact. When people pull back cooperation it creates additional risks. It creates blind spots. It hinders our ability to have our finger on the pulse of what's going on around the state."

Surprisingly, as House Homeland Security Chairman, King appears to absorb little information from the FBI, the National Counterterrorism Center, and the Department of Homeland Security.

Thank you for stimulating my brain. I was not familiar with Streicher. Seems like a better analogy might be Glenn Beck or Rush Limbaugh, but all of them seem to share Streicher's efforts to spread nonsensical hatemongering propaganda at every turn.

King actively supported the Irish republican movement in the 1980s, and frequently traveled to Northern Ireland to meet with senior members of the Provisional Irish Republican Army, many of whom he counted as friends.[10][22] King compared Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams to George Washington and asserted that the "British government is a murder machine",[23] but he did not meet Gerry Adams until 1984, four years after his open support for the IRA began.[24]

He became involved with NORAID, an organization that the British, Irish and U.S. governments had accused of financing IRA activities and providing them with weapons.[10][25][26][27] Regarding the 30 years of violence during which the IRA killed over 1,700 people, including over 600 civilians, King said, "If civilians are killed in an attack on a military installation, it is certainly regrettable, but I will not morally blame the IRA for it".[28] He also called the IRA "the legitimate voice of occupied Ireland."[29]

Now its slowly ringing a bell at my end....if my memory serves me right,Adams visited King in New York in the 198O's-safer for King.King had Irish parents and Catholic. Is long ago.My cousin patrolled Belfast in the early 1980's for one at the time and a very busy time it was, putting it mildly!.But obviously there was no war it seems!.You didn't talk politics in a Irish pub then and you don't today-seriously!.Very difficult issue to solve nowadays when using History as the measure.

I totally agree that we should be concerned about potential terrorist threats. By falsely pushing the idea that "only Muslims commit acts of terrorism" I think people like King increase the danger to us all. If you see someone who looks Middle Eastern put a bag down and walk away, you will probably call the police. But if you see a nice clean cut white guy do the same thing, you're less likely to wonder if there's anything wrong.

I wasn't talking about the poll, I was talking about the terrorism statistics labels. And no, I don't expect Muslims were the most violent, but it seems conveinient that extreme-right, a label that can be thrown on just about any group once they commit a crime, is the "top."n More likely it is a conglomeration of random attacks on targets that may be right leaning targets. As an example, I have more left-wing friends that are violently opposed to abortion than right-wing ones, but if they attacked an abortion clinic, they would be labeled right wing extremists, because that would help further a narrative that conservatives are evil, violent ponies, not because it was true.

I have no doubt that Muslims are opposed to violence. I am sad that Christians aren't more so, but that Muslims are more opposed to violence isn't all that surprising.

The fact is that only 6% of the terrorist attacks or attempts in this country have been by Muslims. The idea that "most" terrorists are Muslims is ridiculous. We can argue all we want about who the terrorists are, but it's pretty clear who the terrorists aren't.

I wasn't arguing that it was Muslims. I have no problem with Muslims, I have several friends that are, and they have taught my quite a bit about Islam. In fact, I think I stated that it wasn't Muslims.

Z - first of all, Thinkprogress is one of the most reliable sources on the internet. They make no secret of their political leanings, provide sources for all of their factual claims, go after Democrats as well as Republicans on a regular basis, and even apologize and print retractions on the rare occasions that they get a fact wrong.

Not to mention that the study was done by the Southern Poverty Law Center, probably the most respected civil rights organization in this country.

Your first and most obvious problem is reading information from a propaganda wagon like "Think Progress" and giving it any form of credibility. I realize that propaganda is an effective tool. It has been used as a political instrument since the formation of Western Civilization, but that does not excuse an individual from being a good enough critical thinker to see it for what it is.

That is basically akin to some republican offering an article from World Net Daily to advance one of their ideas. Both are laughable.

Context is everything in journalism, and I am well aware of the agenda of places like Think Progress in that regard. They run stories quite frequently that are beyond what any reasonable person would consider credible.

I find that a good rule of thumb is that if you are reading information that virtually nobody outside of your particular belief structure takes seriously, then it is probably time to read something else.

I find that if you're only reading information that everyone in your belief system takes seriously- your mind has closed beyond the ability to think or reason.

Like your response- King either made the statement or he didn't.

You seem to have trouble acknowledging it.

Cognitive dissonance is when one pretends a thing cannot have been said- because it is expressed by one whose views mirror their own.

King either said this- or he didn't.

    He did.
