The complications of doing this in the real world are enormousness. With traffic the way it is in most city's adding to that mix cars that drive themselves would be disastrous.
On the other hand it may actually be safer than people that drive with a cell phone, texting or using a computer. :-)

I don't care what it looks like as long as it gets me from A to B.
My SON is embarrassed to be driving the crumpled tin can looking hood that is duct taped & bungee corded down with half a rear bumper, though. ;-p
My grandmother's car is so old it is officially an antique so she doesn't have to buy tags anymore! I think it's an 80s Grand Marquis or something.
How many of you out there HAVE to travel to work, there are a people who have to go to work every day, some of us can work at home a few days of the week i can do work at home for the business without going in to work.
Just saying it might help.
Public transport around here is a laugh, its expensive because no one hardy ever uses it so the company that runs it charges a lot so then its self perpetuating.
The three of us were going for a few drink in the local town, i said that i would catch the bus.Three changes and £7.50 and i would have been in the bus for 1hour 30 minutes to travel 12 miles, i told the woman it would be quicker and cheaper if i cycled, fair play she agreed with me that it was shambolic.
There has to be more incentives for people to use public transport, i would use it if it was viable to use it,out in Hanover they park outside the city in this massive car park and they jump on the tram which stops at various points on the way in,back in 1994 it was 4 DM which was around a £1 and the car park was about £1.50 all day and they ran every 20 minutes and to the center of Hanover was 7/8 miles so park and ride for ...

And people used it because it was viable.
They would never do that around here, they would make the car park expensive and the mode of transport expensive and then no one would use it, and they all would be scratching their head it the town hall and all in union would say "why dont they use the park and ride it worked in Germany and a load of other places"
At the rate the Chinese are going, they will beat us to that point with our own money paid with the interest on our debt.
I have a different opinion on this ..
For as someone who is now Vision Impaired (Blind) ..
I wasn't always blind (I did have sight and drove myself) ..
one of the biggest FRUSTRATIONS is that now I must have help getting from place to place
(have some wonderful friends and family who do drive me places .. for which I am eternally grateful).
BUT .. I can say this ..
I would so LOVE this as an option ..
so ENJOY the freedom of the road once again ..
with a Vehicle that can be programmed to drive me from place to place ..
(and I'm NOT a city-dweller .. I do live and enjoy the RURAL LIFE) ..
I'd just like to once again ..
have the FUN of the open road .. be able to travel .. and have my vehicle take me there even as a BLIND person ..
(independently of others)
Let's just bail on the whole idea while we still can.
