Google is offering $20 Million dollars, as part of its "Google Lunar X Prize," to the first privately funded team to make it into space and land on the moon. To be eligible to win, the teams must smoothly land a rover on the surface of the moon, have the rover travel for at least 500 meters, send data back to Earth, along with photos and a video. The deadline for the competition is December 31st, 2012.
Google is expecting around 25 teams to compete, comprised of scientists, engineers, business people, students and experts in robotics. The plan behind this all is to get space enthusiasts to come up with new ideas of how we can send more people into space less expensively.
