Today would have been the 189th birthday of Gregor Mendel, the Austrian botanist credited as being the "father of modern genetics" for his early work in discovering dominant and recessive hereditary traits in peas.
That explain's Google's newest doodle.

Mendel spent much of his time from 1856 to 1863 cultivating and studying pea plants to help him outline how genes are passed on and in what capacity, eventually leading to his Laws of Inheritance.
His discoveries are still central to the study of genetics.
