Given how crappy Windows Vista & Windows 7 were, it's fitting that Bill Gates' "next big thing" is a toilet

Perhaps the single greatest innovation to improve public health was the creation of safe sanitation — the toilet. But for 2.6 billion living in the developing world, their inability to take care of business cleanly results in massive contamination, causing nearly 1.5 million child deaths every year.

In response to this tragic figure, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation asked innovators to “reinvent the toilet,” a feat not accomplished since 1775. The winners were announced this week.

Among the “next generation” of toilets is one that use microwave energy to transform human waste into electricity and another that captures urine to use it for flushing. One toilet even turns waste into charcoal.

“Many of these innovations will not only revolutionize sanitation in the developing world, but also help transform our dependence on traditional flush toilets in wealthy nations,” foundation co-chair Bill Gates said.

The foundation’s parameters for this toilet of the future required that it operate without running water, electricity or a septic system, infrastructure lacking in the developed world. It also could not discharge pollutants, and must operate on five cents a day.

“Innovative solutions change people’s lives for the better,” said Gates. “If we apply creative thinking to everyday challenges, such as dealing with human waste, we can fix some of the world’s toughest problems.”

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation also announced a second round of grants that totaled $3.4 million to continue researching this problem.

Vista and 7 are just XP with allot of bells and whistles(I give Vista too much credit),,,the security updates; the blue screens and the over-priced software;was and is a financial boon for Microsoft....and now MS is dropping support for XP(amazing 2000 and XP; the most stable of their systems; are a fly in MS ointment)

And now they want to build a toilet(wifi so it can be registered?)

Amazing how Americans throw money away on such stupidity

They feel we have a problem. Now what are you going to do with all these charcoal briquets that we are making.

I stayed on XP for a long time, probably 8 years, because I never upgrade without buying a new, more powerful computer. Everything was working well. I now have Win 7 Home Premium on a new box with more memory. It works fine.

Vista was indeed a catastrophe, but I don't see anything wrong with Windows 7. It works fine for me. Windows 8, however, looks like another disaster.

Some people say there is a pattern in past Windows releases:
    3.1: Not too bad.
    95: Total crap
    98: Quite good
    ME: Total crap
    XP: Great
    Vista: Total crap
    7: Best Windows ever
    8: Total crap?

If this pattern continues, it might be wise to skip Win 8 and wait for the Win 9 release.

Jeez I hated Vista! I ended up buying Windows 7 which is somewhat better. Ihave an older Gateway tower that I put in my hobby room, and it has XP. I thought that was a good one (for Microsoft) and use it a lot.
Next time I think I'll try a Mac.

I can just imagine what a disaster this latest venture will be.....flaming turds flying all over the place, getting blasted with pee....then come the updates and patches...oh, the humanity!

Yep. I still run XP. Does everything an OS needs to. Anything new could be easily implemented on top of it.

Since Bill Gates stepped down in the year 2000 as the Chief Executive... you will concede that Bill had very little to do with it. Ballmer on the other hand had everything to do with it. In fact by the time Vista was released Gates was only working with Microsoft part time.

And considering he now invests in hundreds of impoverished communities, charitable projects and others...

    OMG, it's primarily a JOKE.

But as long as you bring it up ----

It's the overall strategy I object to. That was set years ago by Gates, and is still being followed.

Microsoft piles one useless, dysfunctional upgrade upon another, and uses its monopoly power to force people to "upgrade".

The fact is, Windows XP is a perfectly viable operating system. Microsoft could easily implement any new functionality it desires on top of the XP platform, and rather than force these massive, disruptive upgrades every three years, release them as incremental upgrades to XP.

If you're that ticked off with it, why don't you use Linux? I use Fedora ^_^ I've long since cured myself of MS.

I still run XP, and will try to do so as long as I can. I have too much software I have to use that runs on Windows.

And I'm NOT "ticked off" about it - it was a JOKE for Christ's sake.

If you don't think it was funny, fine. But it was a JOKE!

*shrug* I've moved on from the joke >.<

I don't think XP was a perfectly viable operating system, in fact I think the only viable system was either 95 or 98 (for security purposes...I think it was the former) as it was the only modern operating system to make it into the orange book when not connected to the internet >.<

I don't agree. 95 & 98 did not have pre-emptive multitasking. That's an absolute requirement. They also contained large amounts of the Windows 3.1 code base, incredibly!

XP was based on NT's core. NT was designed & built from the ground up as a modern, pre-emptive multi-tasking OS. The project was headed by the man who built VAX/VMS for DEC.

I love XP, it's on my laptop and more secure than Vista. Haven't had problems with 7 yet it's more like xp. Yeah after crappy Vista definitely a step in the right direction to the crapper.
