'Girls Around Me' Pulled From App Store: Creepiest App Ever?

Apps can be wonderful things. They can tell our friends where we are, upload pictures on-the-spot, and keep us connected with our loved ones from across the country. But all these things border on a growing fear that this technology might be used against us, and with "Girls Around Me," what you might call a "stalker app," that might have come true. Fortunately, Apple tore the app from its store.

According to the app's website, the program "scans your surroundings and helps you find out where girls or guys are hanging out [and] browse photos of lovely local ladies and tap their thumbnail to find out more about them." PC World writes that users were able to use Foursquare and Facebook to determine personal information and locations of nearby people, but Foursquare quickly blocked the app. The creators, SMS Services, are planning to release an updated version, presumably with an opt-in requirement. What do you think? Does "Girls Around Me" sound like the creepiest app ever?

It's really strange, but as long as you have to opt-in I guess it's okay, but why do it? Girls and guys are everywhere, just look up from your phone while waiting in line for coffee and strike up a conversation.

*shrug* there's an app used around here that all the gay guys use to hook up with other gay guys near them. Can't remember what it's called. It's pretty easy to find guys who are in the closet though...if they've made an account on there.

Yes it is, but don't forget, it's just doing what a real stalker can do for himself. Watch and be smart. If you see the same face behind you 5 or 6 times in an evening in different parts of town, it's really doubtful it's a coincidence.

Why is the app creepy? It's just the logical conclusion of all the narcissistic 'look at me! look at me!' social networking people have been indulging in for some time. The app doesn't have access to information that people haven't already made available - a dream-come-true for stalkers. The app is off the shelves; the info remains.

This is the social media equivalent of exposing a lot of flesh and then getting mad when people stare.

There are a lot of creepy apps, Gals remember to shut off the GPS on your phone and this crap goes away as do the creeps. As a father of a daughter, any vermin that would stalk my daughter would learn it's best to not mess with the daughter of a redneck, castration would be the least of his worries.
