Because there was never any talk of Paleos until after the IDF kicked the crap out of the invading armies of 5 Moslem Arab nations in the 1967 War.

The area was divided, by the Brits, between the Moslem Arabs (90%) and the Jews (10%)
    in 1948.

What gave the Brits the right to do this? They took it from the Turks in 1917 and they did not want that land permanently, so they divided it as mentioned above. In WWI the exit strategy was Victory and they conquered the that area.

The Moslems are lucky they receieved anything because they and sided with Hitler and the Nazis during WWII. The Grand Mufti Hussien of Jerusalem was Hitler's 'special' guest in Berlin during the war. Grand Mufti Hussein raised 3 divisions of Moslems for the SS.

The West Bank was given to Jordan to adminster and Gaza was given to Egypt to adminster. There was never any intent for the Paleos to have a nation. All they were given was a homeland.

After the IDF took those two pieces of real estate in the 1967 War, the Moslem Arabs knew that they could never take it back from the Israelis, so they begin agitating for a Paleo state.
Here is were the term Paleo begins enters the history books.

Their Moslem Arab brothers will fight to the death of the last Paleo.
Their Moslem Arab brothers give the Paleos enough to fight and die, but never enough to win.

He's absolutley right on that point. It was the Roman Empire that coined that phrase to insult the Jewish peoplel. The original land of Caanan (or the Gaza Strip) was inhabited by the Greeks not Arabs. All Arabs came from the area of Saudi Arabia before the mohammadians invaded Israel in the 7th century AD. If you read the koran, Jerusalem/the land of Israel is not even in the unholy book; just verses about killing off the Jews and the rest on the non-muslim population. The muslims in Israel belong in Trans Jordan and Saudi, but those countries just use them to keep trouble stirred up to take over and kill off all the Jews. They do not, never did and never will, want a state within Israel, they want a state instead of Israel. The leaders of the PA, Hamas , Hezbollah have publically repeated this, time and time again. What is it about that, does the world not understand?

Newt Gingrich is both correct, and wrong at the same time (it all depends on your view of what Palestine is, or is not). What he is trying to say in the majority of the people claiming to be Palestinians come from elsewhere, and therefore majority of the population are not really "Palestinians". It is a academic question, and Newt is a professor, so he can argue the matter either way; "Palestinians", or "not Palestinians".

No matter how the term comes out in the wash, the whole Palestine separate state thing is a political ploy (which is what Newt is getting at) to hamstring Israel. Blah, blah, blah.

The Israelis have another problem bigger than that though, and it is that the population within Israel. The Muslim population inside of Israel (much like the "Palestinian" population right up against Israel) has a high birth rate. Jews within Israel have a low birth rate. Furthermore, most Jews hold dual citizenship, whereas most Muslims (even if they do hold dual citizenship) are very much tied to where they live (the Jews not so much). The Muslims are perfectly willing to fight and die, whereas the Jews are not interested in dying, and not all that interested in fighting. The real threat to Israel is from within first, up against its border second, and then a very ...

So Newt Gingrich's point about Palestinians is more about the population chess game that has been going on, and whether or not Palestinians should be deemed legitimate, and therefore a two state solution pursued. Like I said, Newt Gingrich is a professor, so he could change his mind on what a good idea is in this matter, but as long as he is saying "the Palestinians were an invented people", he is saying you can forget a two state solution as being a solution.

One could say that "Americans" are an "invented people" using similar logic. I have a feeling that Gingrich knows more about the subject than belies his statement which was ideological not scholarly. Palestine is a region, Israel is a people and were such (at least according to the Bible) before they left Egypt for the region of Canaan already inhabited, which was later called Judea under Roman rule, Palestine under the British/Franco rule, alternately parts of what is now Lebanon, Jordan and Israel were referred to as Palestine under Ottoman rule. It is referred to as early as 1000 B.C. in Egyptian texts.

the area known as Palestine has been known as such since the fifth century BC -what would you call people who live in Palestine but Palestinians?

Israelis are invented- they did not exist before 1947

I agree with you, No doubt this was just a political move on Newt's part, to get the votes of people that support Israel and some Jewish votes. Even though he is right on the Pal statement. But the history of the Jewish homeland is a huge book in itself and can't be summed up in one statement. As for Newt, even a broken clock is right twice a day. And gives the Paul supporters a reason to go on the attack mode.
