ATLANTA – Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal has signed legislation that would require thousands of people applying for welfare to pass a drug test before they could receive benefits.

The Republican-controlled Legislature passed the law over the opposition of Democrats.

Backers say it will ensure that welfare benefits are used for their intended purpose and not to subsidize drug use and criminal activity. Democrats said the measure places an unfair burden on the poor.

Gerry Weber of the Southern Poverty Law Center said the organization is prepared to file a lawsuit over the issue, but not until it is put into practice. It takes effect July 1.

A similar law in Florida took effect last July but was blocked by a federal judge in October.

At least two dozen states have proposed measures this year that would require drug tests for benefits.

sounds like the same excuses for the same BS laws in RTW states.

Yet Florida is not done ... they upped it again just yesterday.

$35 Bucks, a 'tobacco' pipe store, and a hot-hands hand warmer. That's all that is needed to pass a UA, no matter what you have in your system. Yes, they actually manufacture fake urine and bottle it. Go ahead, waste that time and money, it is merely a formality.

Good idea, but people will always find away to support their vices.

based on what? The results showed that drugs were not a problem in the first place.

It's a GREAT THING.....You want Welfare...Pass a drug test...go to school , earn a trade and life skills...go OFF welfare within ONE YEAR and get a job and pay taxes to support others who need help. Welfare is a hand UP not a Hand OUT.....These miscreants ahve made it a " lifestyle"...that...is coming to a screeching halt .

Drug tests may be more costly, but with less drug addicts going on welfare we'll actually be able to give the money to the right people who need it.

Beyond the ethical reasons that it's wrong its proven infective and wasteful since the cost of testing way exceeded the money saved

What's not ethical is the hard working people continuing to support those doing drugs and getting a check each month for nothing.

So you'd rather spend twice as much so you can cotrol what they spend thier money on?

It's not their money they are spending. Unless they earned it, and if they are accepting welfare they didn't, it isn't theirs.

Yet Florida test results PROVED that those receiving welfare WERE NOT doing drugs. 96% of the recipients passed the test.
Continuing to spout the myth does not make it fact by any stretch.

Should be mandatory everywhere, if they can afford drugs they don't need my money.
