Amazon's big check supports gay marriage in state of Washington

It never hurts to ask.

Jeff Bezos, the billionaire founder of Amazon.com, and his wife MacKenzie are donating $2.5 million in support of legalizing same-sex marriage in the state of Washington.

Amazon.com has had its headquarters in Seattle since the company was founded in 1994, so Bezos was surely up to speed on the fact that a referendum on same-sex marriage is going before the voters in November. The state legislation had legalized same-sex marriage in February, but opponents gathered enough signatures to put it on the fall ballot. And they were outpacing supporters of gay marriage in the fundraising department.

Not now. And all because Jennifer Cast, a former Amazon employee, thought to ask.
According to the New York Times, Cast, who is gay, sent Bezos an e-mail Sunday, July 22, in which she described the difficulties she experienced as a young adult when she came out.

And she wrote from the heart: “I want to have the right to marry the love of my life and to let my children and grandchildren know their family is honored like a ‘real’ family. We need help from straight people. To be very frank, we need help from wealthy straight people who care about us and who want to help us win.”

And then she asked him to give between $100,000 and $200,000 to rally voters to the cause.

She received an e-mail response two days later: “We’re in for $2.5 million. Jeff & MacKenzie.”

Of course, it helps to have crossed paths with an up-and-coming internet entrepreneur who strikes it big. And it helps to have his e-mail address.

And it never hurts to ask.

Mr. and Mrs. Bezo, just like Mr. Cathy, have every right to support their values and donate to whomever they choose. Just as we, the potential patrons at each establishment, have every right to boycott them or support them with our custom.

It is their right to support whomever they wish and our right to do likewise through our purchases or lack thereof.

I have long patronized businesses who support the values I believe in and have avoided those with whom I disagree and will continue to do so.

First and foremost, in my mind, however, is why is the government involved in regulating marriage at all? I, personally, don't feel it is a proper function of government. And while I may feel that a particular lifestyle is sinful, it is not up to me to judge others and as long as they are not personally infringing upon me, I have no argument with them.

Nothing quite like a nice biased poll, eh? I will continue to use amazon. They usually deliver quite quickly, and unless I have problems, I will continue to purchase from their website.

This is a no brainer because I never purchase anything off that site and only use it for price comparison references.
It's amazing what deals people will cut in stores when you show them a page printed from a competitor even if they just told you that their prices are non-negotiable.

It works EXTREMELY well if there are other customers close enough to hear the conversation.

I will however, boycott ANY company that sells a product or service that has chosen to back the Librul/socialist/progressive agenda

There's nothing wrong with being a "middle of the roader." I go issue by issue in my opinions. Some of them are conservative. Some of them are liberal. I don't confine myself to voting within one party.

Believe as your will. Extremism seems to be in vogue now. Regardless I will maintain my support of a small government that keeps it's fingers out of the personal lives of it's people and allows the free market to do what it has always done well: make money.

Just like the US Government did in my great grandfathers day and before.

But that's not moderatism or liberalism; that's conservativism. You ppl are just trying to steal the the conservative plank. Go get your own damn poli party. Ron Paul is a liberal and has no business in running in our party.
  • naarcissus SK-LIBE... 2012/07/28 19:49:03 (edited)
    naarcissus
You have my agreement there. Though I don't agree that Paul is a liberal. He's not a Republican either and should not be trying to run as one. Ron Paul is not a liberal. He wants to remove income tax, death tax, corporate taxes, and death tax, and abolish social security. Additionally he's a Pro-Life creationist (rejects evolutionary theory) and wants to eliminate citizenship by birth and amnesty for illegals and thier children. Doesn't sound liberal.

As to your argument that my belief in how government should work is conservatism, I agree with that to. Though I ask, how does Romney support these ideals? Remember, he's supporting more controls by the Federal Government on the personal lives of the American people by legislating morality. Or at least that's what he's promising.

Oh, and we do have our own political party. The Libertarian Party.

The policy of the American government is to leave their citizens free, neither restraining nor aiding them in their pursuits.
    – Thomas Jefferson
