Gay marriage ban upheld by CA high court

- California's Supreme Court upheld Tuesday a ban on same-sex marriages that state voters passed in November, but it allowed about 18,000 same-sex marriages performed before the ban to remain valid.

The ruling was met with chants of "shame on you" from a crowd of about 1,000 people who gathered outside the court building in San Francisco.

The court made the ruling on the constitutionality of Proposition 8. Opponents wanted the amendment nullified. They said the proposition alters California's Constitution and, therefore, under state law, was a revision that requires a constitutional convention.... Read full article »

    I am a Californian and I am so glad the CA Supreme Court is finally listening to the voters!! The people voted against gay marriage twice now, let's please let it alone!

    Then same sex couples livelyhoods should never come into the Whitehouse, never placed on a bill for approval. Men and women always kept their business private and because it was proper according to the Word of God it was already approved by Almighty God. This sexual activity should be kept out of the WH. President Obama is working on correcting Bush mistakes, which will take another 50 years.

    if it is illegal it is illegal. that means no one can be married to ther on sex. that is the law. how can you say these people can marry but no other gays can. it is illegal. and im a california voter. for 29 years now. this is one of the biggest problems with california.

    I think the debate is false on its merit. If they want to be the same then marry someone of the opposite sex. If they want to be different then let things stay as is. I get confused. The old argument for civil unions was "we want to be recognized because we are unique." Now the argument is "we are the same, as any married couple." WRONG! Sorry, but what are you trying to accomplish? No matter how mainstream you think your lifestyle should be it isn't. You're messing with the population at large. If you want to be treated as a special minority then advocate your position that way. "Shame on you," for thinking you can win against the Obama supporters that shut you down.

    sorry they did its call we the peole the voters haven't you heard of the constitution the bill of rights. the court upheld the voters it's called democracy you know the most voters win.

    It didn't. Under civil rights laws, it should be illegal to deny marriage to gay and lesbian couples as it makes them second class citizens. The job of the government is to protect those rights if the citizens of the United States can't do that themselves.

    marrige was set up by god for a man and awoman to commit there love in front of god and have childeren. not so people could have sex with there own sex and eleminate the whole purpose of marrige. which is to procreate. the gay lofe style is breaking down the moral fabric of America. uust like meri said they are gay to be different not to be the same. it is just something else they think they can take from normal society.

    That would work if we were a Christian nation, but we are not. Marriage is not essential in procreation, if it were we wouldn't have any unwanted births. Marriage is an institute created by man as a form of union in society.

    They are different because they were born different, but they are still people and deserve to be treated like equals. What gender they are attracted to doesn't matter.

    ok first of all we are a christian nation. contrary to what obama wants to change us to. second marrage is not an instatution set up by man it is ordaned by god. people that have chideren out of wed lock have lost there way. they were not born that way. it is a choice. main reason people are gay. is because woman bitch. and men cant stand it. and men are a holes and woman wont put up with it. it is a choice. and they have civil union. which bives them the same rights as hedrosexual's. marrage is for hedrosexuals. end of story.

    We are a nation that allows for freedom of religion. A Christian nation would imply a nation made up of only Christians.

    Marriage was made by man. I don't remember anywhere there being a saying, "And I give you marriage, so you may be miserable with your life mate."

    They were born that way. Attraction is biological. Gay men are attracted to other men the same way straight men are attracted to women. The main reason people are gay is that they aren't attracted to the opposite sex.

    Civil unions give them the same 'rights,' but the fact that they aren't allowed to call in marriage implies that they are second class citizens.

    first our laws mirror christian values. dont change it we like it and it has worked for 233 years.
    and marrage was part if gods plan. it is a commitment that two people take in front of god to show there love in a church.
    they werre not born that way cause god CREATED everything and he does not approve of homosexuality. we were given choces some times we make the wrong ones.
    they are second class citizens they chose a life style that is in contrast ith gods plan. and since god created all that we see then it is gods will we are to follow.

    You know those Christian values that originally created America? They were also the values that led to the Salem Witch trials, mass hysteria during the great awakening, and the xenophobic bigotry that made immigrants feel threatened for coming into this country.

    Marriage is a commitment between two people that can take their vows at a drive-tru in Vegas. All that's needed is a Justice of the Peace. God is only involved if you involve him.

    They were born that way because. Just because you don't agree with it doesn't mean that it's unnatural. Animals in nature do it as well and if God created all of them a certain way, then homosexuality must have been apart of his plan.

    They are second class citizens because of bigots like you that would strip them of their rights and deem them as less than human. Try reading something other than your bible, or maybe you should read deeper into it. Do you follow it even though it condones slavery and killing your children because they misbehave? Do you follow it even though it demands the blood of anyone undesirable?

    I have friends that are gay and they're only defensive when some moron comes up and insults them. That's the same way anyone would react. They don't believe that they are wrong, and I don't believe that they are wrong.

    There were many of civilizations that had gay couples long before your god was worshiped. These people were treated with much more dignity than the Bible-thumpers of today give them. And yes, it is your god because there are many things that I disagree with that your god supposedly supports. Number one of those things is the fact that his followers go around and telling people what's wrong by shipping for quotes in their bible and then get defensive when someone even dares to argue with them.

    How funny is that. By your logic, do you think they get defensive because they know they're wrong?

    Ok you say my god. he is the god the only god, the others were made up by man. and there was no before him. you live by the grace of god, in his world in his universe. the only reason anyone is here is because he made earth and the stars etc......................... he cast societys to death for homosexuality. i understand that you have friends that are gay. I do too and it is a shame that they will be denied by god in heavan. but that is the way it is. we were given life by god and when life is over we have to answer to god. he is a very forgiving god. but there are rules. and contrary to what is now taught people were not born gay. it is a choice that they have taken. and it is only because they tried gay life and found it is alot less work to hold a gay relationship. than to have a straight one. people with low self estem dont argue as much. they are afraid they will be shut out so they dont have an openion unless everyone around them feels the same way. and i dont go around telling people about gods word. if they want to know. I'll try to help. but christians have gotten a bad name. and that is because the media has a loud voice and the values set forth by god are anti there cause. so not all christians are there to make peoplws life hard. but there are a few that feel they are better than others. but they are few.
