FTC says the “do not call” list is doing an effective job. Are you still getting calls from unwanted telemarketers?

Still love Seinfeld's response to a telemarketer ...

    JERRY SEINFELD
    This isn't a good time.
    TELEMARKETER
When would be a good time to call back, sir?
    JERRY SEINFELD
I have an idea, why don't you give me your home number and I'll call you back later?
    TELEMARKETER
Umm, we're not allowed to do that.
    JERRY SEINFELD
Oh, I guess because you don't want strangers calling you at home.
    TELEMARKETER
    Umm, no.
    JERRY SEINFELD
Well, now you know how I feel. [hangs up phone]

What I get are so-called charities. I decided that I won't give to anyone soliciting over the phone without checking them out first to see if they meet standards.

Mostly robo-calls . It is incredibly annoying. They should be required to start these calls with their ID and should be fined if they violate do-not-call registry.

I don't think they care if you say that, they will just keep calling, regardless.

Frequently. On my cell number as well. Now that they use computerized dialers-the "do not call list" isn't very effective at all. The computer just dials one number after another in numerical order-not like it used to be when they had a list of people to call.

I was getting at least two a day, but I found a solution.
Whenever they would call I would put the phone up to the TV or radio, turn the volume up as loud as it would go.....end of the telemarketers.

The FTC is completely and utterly posting BULLSH*T when they say that list is effective ..
    each and every day ..
(and yes, I DID register my phones on the DO NOT CALL LIST

MY personal Caller ID is picking up ..
it is the same rotating list of ROBO-Callers
the same nonsense over and over again ..
a narrow list of SCAMMERS ..
that are bound and determined to prey on those who are Vulnerable in this economy ..
These Robo-Calls are rotating through a series of Area Codes too ..
I know these are coordinated Robo-Call Attacks ..
(for if one call is not answered .. they rotate to the other Area Code and call within a few minutes on the same day)

I've filed with the FTC the paperwork denoting these VIOLATIONS of the DO NOT CALL LIST ..
I've dutifully added all the information off my Caller ID and MY Voice-Mailbox ..
I put down date/time groups with the exact info off my phone ..

and YET .. the IDIOTIC FTC does ..

    NOTHING ABOUT THESE SCAM ROBO-CALLS!!!!

    (arrggghhh .. )
(I've also filed now with BBB and the State too ... and with each of those also .. NO word on when these Violating the Law will be stopped .. they still continue to Robo-Call .. )

I just had a thought. I got rid of all the extra, phone company call-features some time ago on my land line, because it hit me I was paying for something that wasn't necessary and coincidentally (though more recently refreshed on the list), I have not been bothered hardly ever. Unless as I say, they are local businesses, occasionally calling from the phone book, which I think is exempt.

Anyway, maybe there is a relation to utilizing caller ID that keeps a person electronically in the loop - in "memory" or something. I've felt that everything has become more intertwined with technology actually creating more issues. With the idea being that they are supposedly simplifying things, it can become more complicated.

I understand, people don't want to eliminate what they are used to and feel that these features are to their benefit, but I found I didn't know who was calling half the time - and guess what? I found I did not miss that or call-waiting, which many feel using is rude. Granted, my lifestyle doesn't warrant the use of those, now.

    Interesting ..
(but given that although Retired .. I still have an active life volunteering and a small business .. I can't quite get rid of some of those 'features' at all .. )

At this point .. the utility of the features is far exceeding any other concern ..
I like the voice-mail access too .. (and can easily delete anything that doesn't make sense)
I'm not always able to get to the phone fast either (being disabled)
so things like this are handy for me .. and I can look up quickly if someone I know called
(and my handset .. I don't need the phone company service .. I BLOCK right at the handset those that annoy .. yet still they try to get the Robo-Calls through .. )

I understand.. many must feel similarly. I know people will think I'm nuts, but I am using an answering machine with the land-line... yes, they still have them available - or did when I got it.. i think it was over a year ago, made by AT&T. I find it gives me enough time if someone begins speaking and also, can screen if I want. Sure, I won't see a number, (but has that capability if you want to pay for caller ID, individually).

It's just as I read through, it appears that most are having the same problem. I think it has to do with what I mentioned.. probably with everyone's numbers electronically displayed, it may be keeping phone numbers electronically stored in memory (despite lists), so they continue to resurface in companies' systems. Not having caller-ID on my land line, I think contributes to my NOT having this issue as much as others.

Again, I realize many people are conditioned to using phone features and let's face it, technology keeps creating things that force people to go with what is available, getting upgrades, etc. I know phones come with "displays" and your phone company wants to sell the masses "feature packages" that go with them, including long-distance costs, etc., but like myself, some could probably go without and be fine. Everyone mostly has a cell phone, besides so some costs are unnecessary (something else I keep low, not having a "plan", but I won't get into that).

    THANKS for reply ..

Mine actually speaks the incoming number to me ..
    (which I need .. since I'm vision impaired/blind .. )
    this is .. in fact .. a necessity ..
I don't have the sight to 'see' what is on displays ..
and I don't trust just generic machines either ..
I've paid a lot for this tool for my use ..
and it is something that makes life easier for many who have disabilities overall ..

Okay, not to beat a dead horse, but I will just mention that this machine I use has the capability to help vision-impaired, too, announcing the incoming number - (maybe name, too) - just don't recall since I don't use that feature.

If a company calls me after I ask them not to, I have a police whistle and I blow it into the earpiece, and they surprisingly never make that mistake again.

The kind of whistle with the little ball inside that bounces round when blown: a police whistle. O it more than works, and I don't blow it that hard; I don't want to cause nerve damage - just stop them from calling.
