From hot dogs to slick ads: Unions spent $4.4 billion on politics in past 6 years. How much is too much?

A Wall Street Journal analysis of political spending unveiled Tuesday found that organized labor groups dropped a combined $4.4 billion on political activities between 2006 and 2011, about four times more than previously estimated.

The Journal cast a wide net to determine what counted as "political spending," including activities that range from traditional candidate donations to the cost of hot dogs for union demonstrators at political rallies.

To find the additional costs, the newspaper added spending reports filed with the Labor Department to Federal Election Commission spending data. From the report, which is partially behind a paywall at WSJ.com, but is available in full at FoxNews.com:

The usual measure of unions' clout encompasses chiefly what they spend supporting federal candidates through their political-action committees, which are funded with voluntary contributions, and lobbying Washington, which is a cost borne by the unions' own coffers.

These kinds of spending, which unions report to the Federal Election Commission and to Congress, totaled $1.1 billion from 2005 through 2011, according to the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics.

The unions' reports to the Labor Department capture an additional $3.3 billion that unions spent over the same period on political activity.

The costs reported to the Labor Department range from polling fees, to money spent persuading union members to vote a certain way, to bratwursts to feed Wisconsin workers protesting at the state capitol last year. Much of this kind of spending comes not from members' contributions to a PAC but directly from unions' dues-funded coffers. There is no requirement that unions report all of this kind of spending to the Federal Election Commission, or FEC.

Union spending goes overwhelmingly to Democratic candidates and liberal causes. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, which tracks political spending, 92 percent of the $58.5 million in direct candidate donations from 1990 to 2012 went toward Democratic candidates.

Many have learned a lot more than they wanted since The unions tried to oust Scott Walker as Governor in Wisconsin. Walker is still Governor. They failed and lost again. Unions used to be beneficial but now are trying to influence voters with union members dues. Bad situation all around. SEIU and the UAW are very aware they are in decline in this era of disdain for organized labor thuggery.

They should not only get out of politics, but be busted in general; we have agencies now to take care of the things they do.

It used to be my state that had the best politicians money could buy (Agnew) but I see that Unions have taken the title away from us.

There's a lot wrong with the way we select our candidates and no longer does the common man (tree trimmer, invention fiddler or farmer) have any chance of running for higher office unless he also has money making machines behind him. In my own social circles, I don't know any Soros's, Gates or even Mrs. Fields so that leaves me exempt from running regardless of my qualifications!

I don't understand why at one time alcohol was prohibited, drugs came under control and yet unions have been allowed to operate. Unfortunately, we keep statistics on deaths by alcohol and drugs, but none on Unions. And I'll just bet that unions are responsible for multitudes of hits!

No question that unions have outlived their usefulness and become leeches on society. Time to put them down, with prejudice.

Agreed. We now have LAWS for every inequity that Unions represented and fought for. But unions are still strong arming their way into business's and still prying the union dues from their followers. These workers should wake up and take control of their own lives.

Yes and Romney has a fun raiser at $75 thousand a plate at his rich friends who own the the companies that are anti union . Whats the difference ? We are not slaves for the rich on either side as they use the third worlds for . Tell Romney to stop the outsourcing and calling himself a Patriot , same goes for Obama .

Yeah in 2001 he went limited , how many jobs did he help outsource before that ? He is the one who got the ball rolling and got paid well for it . After that Bain is nothing more then his disciples going by his teachings of outsourcing and making huge profits from it . Romney seems to turn tail and run when the crap gets deep just as he did the Vietnam war with an excuse that he didn't wish for his life to go that way .

I think the majority of pols of both parties are in it for the money, power, and lifestyle. It always comes down to the lesser evil...that is just a fact of life.
I weigh the facts .... we are in dire trouble after 6 years of dem control...time for new blood.

Hmm the ship has been sinking well over 6 years now . What new blood do you purpose that hasn't helped to sink the ship ? Best we can do is vote everyone of them out and I don't see that happening but sure would like to see it happen .

I think things have been going progressively downhill with progressive ideology, The Great Society, and big nanny gov. ...from both parties.
    W was a big disappointment...and bo is a disaster.
My only alternative is to pray the businessman at least gets our economy on the right tract, and gets folks back to work, ....and off the dole.

I agree but I don't think your prayers will come true unless we work for $365 a month as the Chinese do . Only thing the business man can see is profits for the share holders . No way we can compete at those wages its all just a dream being foreign corporation don't pay tax no benefit no insurance no nothing in China . We are on a race down hill because of this free trade and corporation loves it . 300 % and up markup is what ts all about .No more patriotism in this country .

Unfortunately both parties have been complicit in making small U.S. companies unable to compete by favoring corp. welfare for huge international corporations.
    http://www.hoover.org/publica...
Time to end it...time for a simple flat tax on corps....no more GE! Something the pols can not tinker with to gain money, and power by writing loopholes for special interests.

Get rid of free trade , when Chinese charge us up the butt to sell our products there and we let them slide you know something is wrong . Get rid of the UN that is dragging us into the NWO allowing big business to govern . The only thing I can see is a revolution that would work . Every damn one of them out of control left and right and We The People who built a great nation suffer from it . Is this what Obama meant by spread te wealth ? Obama got to go , Romney his brother never needs to get in to finish the job . All politicians all American corporations and all who work for them are against us . Bad thing is they now have all the money and people will do anything for them for money even be traitors to this country to feed their families .

Either way you lose or I should say we lose . Think ill go third party this time . Got nothing to lose that we haven't already lost . I went through the first recession and it was hell digging back out . I thank God I just made it through this time though I wasn't planning on retiring so early . I feel for all the older people who lost everything , no way for them to start over unless they hit it rich

too bad then. it is ineffecient to produce an item when others have both a comparative and absolute advantage. We should focus on creating that in which we are more effecient.

Thats another problem that we did was getting more efficient with robots killing many many jobs . We no longer look at man to keep them working and satisfied we look at profits keeping the rich rich and satisfied . The old system no longer works for modern day working man . How long do you think all this dumping of the American worker or decreasing their pay when the cost of living gets higher day by day is going to go on before they revolt ? If they do its going to be to bad for the outsourcing corporations and the share holders .
