Free Condom App for NYC: Handy or Unnecessary?

New Yorkers in need of quick, affordable protection will never have to locate a drug store again, and will even save money by avoiding them. All they've got to do is pull up the NYC Health Department's Condom Finder Services app -- and bam! Free condoms. The app will direct users to the nearest location that offers free Lifestyles condoms, and there are apparently over 1,000 participating locations in the NYC area alone.

NYC Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley told The New York Daily News, "New Yorkers are mobile, so we need to reach them both with sexual health information and easy access to service information wherever they are ... We distributed well over 36 million male condoms and 1 million female condoms last year." Apparently there is a high demand for cheap birth control among smart phone users. Go figure. Do you think New York's free condom app is handy or unnecessary?

As long as I am the one not paying for them ~ I don't care. If my tax dollars are paying for condoms for people who can afford smart phones, then I'm pissed.

Ok, yeah it's a bit unfair tht ppls taxes would have to go into help pay for the condoms but seriously, it eliminates so many other problems tht r worst like stds, unwanted pregnancies, abortions, etc.

I think for a city it's size and with it's constant influx of new residents, this app can help in so many ways. With prostitution like it is, college age kids, everyone strapped for cash, this is handy. This isn't a question of who's paying for it or should they. This is just a matter of is it practical or pointless. :)

well, considering that lately kids as young as 12 years of age are engaging in sexual acts i think its good to keep safe, however i don't encourage sexual activity

anything to stop "unwanted" babies, aids, diseases etc..................free is sometimes best in a pinch.................remember the girl generally gets "stuck with the results"...........great thing.

It is not stupid spending; it is smart. Will save having to pay welfare and health care, as well as preventing the birth of one who may not be wanted. Our prisons are full of people who were born into homes where they were not wanted!
All of us have done stupid things when young; but let's not have a baby suffer because of his parents bad thinking.

What I said is the truth. Next thing you know there will be free birth control in all high schools. Which means more sluts and more women murdering unborn babies. Did you know that from 1970-2012 there have been over 30 million abortions in the U.S. alone? Women should only have an abortion if they can prove that they were raped.

I am thinking that when the free condom program was made it was to serve the less fortunate of the population, to help control the spread or STD's. These should go out to the people who can't afford to get condoms not to people who can afford the smart phone plan. If you have enough money to pay for your phone and the monthly fees attached to that choice surely you can afford to pay for your condoms.
