Fort Hood Hero Says Obama 'Betrayed' Victims: Do Military Victims Deserve Purple Hearts?

President Obama denied issuing Purple Hearts to the wounded military personnel of the Fort Hood terrorist attack because he classified the attack as "workplace violence" instead of "combat related." This decision also denies other financial benefits to the wounded victims and the families of the deceased. Maj. Nidal Hasan served as a member of the U.S. military when he committed the Jihad attack on November 2009 attack at Fort Hood in Texas. The attack left 32 wounded and 13 adults and an unborn baby dead.

The victims of the attack have protested that President Obama has denied them proper benefits and recognition as victims of an attack.

"These guys play stupid every time they’re asked a question about it, they pretend like they have no clue,” said Shawn Manning, who was shot six times that day at Fort Hood. Two of the bullets remain in his leg and spine, he said.

“It was no different than an insurgent in Iraq or Afghanistan trying to kill us,” said Manning, who was twice deployed to Iraq and had to retire from the military because of his injuries.

Department of Defense criteria for Purple Heart: The criteria for the Purple Heart award state that the injury must have been caused by enemy action or in action against the enemy and has to be of a degree requiring treatment by a medical officer.

Wikipedia defines Purple Heart criteria: The Purple Heart is awarded in the name of the President of the United States to any member of the Armed Forces of the United States who, while serving under competent authority in any capacity with one of the U.S. Armed Services after April 5, 1917, has been wounded or killed...
Injuries or wounds which do not qualify for award of the Purple Heart include frostbite or trench foot injuries; heat stroke; food poisoning not caused by enemy agents; chemical, biological, or nuclear agents not released by the enemy; battle fatigue; disease not directly caused by enemy agents; accidents, to include explosive, aircraft, vehicular, and other accidental wounding not related to or caused by enemy action; self-inflicted wounds (e.g., a soldier accidentally fires their own gun and the bullet strikes his or her leg), except when in the heat of battle, and not involving gross negligence; post-traumatic stress disorders;[7] and jump injuries not caused by enemy action.

They were wounded during the completion of their duties and weather it was in a war zone or on a secure base on American soil it makes no difference. An enemy opened fire and as a result they were wounded. To deny them the honor due to them is breaking the covenant of duty honor and country, and service before self that our oath of enlistment represents.

No but its a very fine line. A line that needs more clearly defined because of incidents like Ft. Hood.

I believe they deserve benefits and compensation but I dont think that should fall under the Purple Heart. There really needs to be another classification for victims like those at Ft. Hood.

How is Shawn Manning a "Fort Hood Hero"? Getting shot doesn't make you a hero.
  • askmike Magus BN-0 2013/02/13 22:10:56

A hero does something heroic, and getting shot when you are defenseless is not in any way an act of heroism. Had Manning lobbed a grenade at Hasan while exposing himself to harm, or had he charged Hasan with a butter knife in disregard of his own life, he would qualify as a hero and as such deserve a medal of his heroism. Getting shot is not an act of heroism.

Those shot and killed were not engaging an enemy in combat. They got killed/injured by one of their own people. The purple heart is specifically a combat decoration. You wanna talk about giving out purple hearts then all those who died in 9/11 should of gotten one.

NO, Purple Hearts are for people wounded in combat not workplace violence.

This wasn't some pissed off worker or disgruntled former employee. This was a radical Islamic terrorist carrying out a Jihad attack. This was an act of war carried out in 2009.

2006: "the war on terror is not over". President G.W. Bush

2010: "We will always seek to delegitimise the use of terrorism and to isolate those who carry it out. Yet this is not a global war against a tactic – terrorism – or a religion – Islam.

"We are at war with a specific network, al-Qaeda, and its terrorist affiliates who support efforts to attack the United States, our allies, and partners." President B.H. Obama

Sounds to me like it is deserved.

It is taking so long because first they spent millions nursing him back to health so he could be nice and healthy for his trial. This is one of those cases that I see NO need for a trial ! There were dozens of credible witnesses and he was taken down mid killing spree with the smoking gun quite literally taken from his hand ! Take him out back and put two in the back of his head !! Why waste the money ? If there was ANY doubt I am all for a trial but not in this case. Here is an example. You walk into a room and there is a dead body on the floor. One other person in the room and he is holding a smoking gun. Chances are 99.99% that he is guilty but nobody saw and there is a chance he walked in on a suicide and picked up the gun. The main thing is that there is a shred of a doubt so you HAVE to have a trial. In his case, there is no doubt, put him out of his misery !!!
