It's food dye, which is a vegetable dye, I think, and harmless to fish, etc.

I would guess that

1) the substance used to dye it green is non toxic
or 2) less toxic than the actual water in the Chicago River.

I dare you to drink a cup of it even before it's been dyed.

Well actually, they should be more up in arms about the facts that the river was made to flow in the opposite direction to avoid contaminating the lake or that you can't fish or swim in it anymore, if they are worried about anything regarding the Chi River. As for being green, that thing is pretty much green year-round- just gets a tad greener in the ides of March...

Had a friend that had to go to Gordon for summer school, he jumped in the river on a bet and was sick for most the next school year. Hazard zone. Do you know that the buildings along the river in the loop have "designated" waste "days" washouts into the river?" Thank goodness, I was on the 50th floor and couldn't smell chit. You can see thousands upon thousands gallons of waste emptied and it is legal, too. Unreal. So much for city hall having a "green" rooftop.
