A serious effort is underway by some Floridalawmakers to eliminate the current state tax on fuel (also known as a the gas tax) and instead tax drivers based on how many miles they drive. The theory is that the more miles you drive, the more roads and infrastructure you use and therefore you should pay more.

The lawmakers hope to use GPS tracking devices installed in all vehicles to keep track of how many miles you drive, then tax you accordingly. This has some Florida drivers angry that the new system will end up costing some of them more than others. Of course, that’s the idea: to charge based on usage, not a flat tax for everyone including those who don’t drive very much at all.

Two seconds after they pass and implement this scheme, you bet the state and the insurance companies will start tracking where you go and how quickly you get there. If they decide you are speeding anywhere, an automatic ticket will show up in the mail.

I already pay plenty of taxes to operate my vehicle: fuel taxes, vehicle registration, sales tax, road tolls, tire tax, state tax; why should I pay more taxes to drive.

NO, NO and NO! NO New Taxes!

I think it's time to start taxing politicians by the word, maybe they'll keep their mouths shut.
Ten dollars per word should be suffice, if not it can always be doubled or tripled accordingly.

Taxing by the mile will have an adverse effect on the owners of high fuel mileage and hybrid vehicles and also removes some of the incentive to purchase hybrid vehicles which will effect their sales.

Tracking by GPS, I don't think so, I'll pass on that.

This brings up a question of another possibility?

Are there now so many electric and hybrid cars in Florida that the government's revenue is being reduced by this "green" energy which was supposed to save money and the environment?

This looks too much like Big Brother wanting to spy on us determined by where we go. That way, they know who attends "Tea Party Rallies" and obama pinata parties.

Besides, has anyone ever seen a tax REALLY go away? It might reduce a little bit for a while but invariably they almost always come back at a higher rate. Most of the taxes which I remember were supposed to go away are still in place and in some cases even higher. NEVER, EVER, EVER give the government something else to tax you on.

It'll start off that way, as just a way to tax people, then at some point the Benevolent government well begin to regulate when and how much you can drive, they will no doubt incorpoate a way to disable your car so they can "Help" you stay in compliance. Police at Check points

"Sir I need to see your peremission to drive permit and and your monthly miles driven record"

This is actually a tax on people who move to the suburbs to get away from crime-ridden cities. It's punishing people who have saved enough money to afford a home. The idea that roads are overused by commuters is not just nonsense, it ignores the fact that the state and feds charge an excise tax on the gasoline we burn to pay for those roads. It's just another way to punish success.

I propose a GPS attached to all elected officials. Then we can tax them, hold them to the standards we expect and track their every move. If they don't hold up to the standard then we either fire them or better yet withhold their pay.

Decent idea in theory to hopefully get people to drive less and take advantage of other means of travel that will use less fuel and ultimately help the environment. Unfortunately it's not perfect and I wish the government would just do away with gas in general, its time for a new power source.
