Fire on 88th Floor of 1 WTC Contained

Firefighters have contained a flash fire that broke out on the 88th floor of 1 World Trade Center Wednesday morning, fire officials said.
FDNY Battalion Chief Kevin Brennan says welding equipment on the floor caught fire just before 7:45 a.m. The fire was contained to the equipment and did not spread to the walls or floor, Brennan said.
About 12 workers were on the 88th floor when the equipment caught fire. As a precaution, the FDNY issued a call for all hands on deck and 100 firefighters responded, Brennan said. The fire was brought under control by 8:40 a.m.
No injuries were reported. Authorities shut down some streets, including Vesey Street and the area west of Greenwich Street, to assist the investigation. All street closures had been lifted by 9:30 a.m.
Last week, a steel beam signed by President Barack Obama was lifted into place at the top of the 104-story skyscraper that's being built to replace the twin towers destroyed in the Sept. 11 attacks.
It's expected to be completed in 2014.

I have to tell you, it's been fascinating to watch the building grow. I can't see it from where I live but whenever I'm in Brooklyn or Queens you get some great views of the skyline, and I can remember when the building first got tall enough to make out. Now that they've topped it off it is the most prominent building in downtown Manhattan.
Of course, I still remember when the original World Trade Center was being built, too....
