Those who listened to the debate instead of watching it on TV, clearly determined Nixon won the debate. Kennedy was the first in succession of the telegenic presidents.

Nixon wasn't as good of a public speaker; stems from his probable paranoia. In general, I think he was the better president in terms of what he accomplished in office, but he was not exactly good in anything that required him to be very social, that includes debate. People who had just been listening wouldn't have seen his tell-tale body language; Kennedy was the television president.

I listened on radio and the content was much better by Nixon although as we found out he was psychologically unstable. Most Americans vote on looks and flash and hence Kennedy won the TV debate...

Nixon didn't "win" until someone shot Kennedy.

I watched it. Nixon was no competition at all for John.

I watched it too but was young, liberal and stupid then. Today, I know what I thought then, was flawed.

Well, Kennedy won the election, so in that sense he won the debate. However, his head was subsequently blown off so if going to an early grave is winning, I guess he won. However, Nixon was elected 12 years later and was not killed in office. He was just forced to resign. So really, it was a tie. I'd say they both lost.

Nixon was also elected *eight* years later.
