Many children have gay/lesbian parents and should be allowed to speak about it if they so choose. 5th graders are plenty old enough to express how they feel about it...

My ex sister in law and her wife have three adopted children (two sons and a daughter). They know they have two mothers and are VERY well adjusted children. All three are precocious and absolutely wonderful young people (ranging in age from about 5 to 13). They have as much a right to speak freely about their family as anyone else - and they do. They are all socially aware of I'm proud to be their aunt.

Kudos to this young 5th grade boy for having the courage to speak out and shame on the school for banning his speech.

Now they are censoring kids? What the hell is wrong with this world. If opinions are going to be brought into schools, then let the kid speak. We shouldn't let personal opinions in schools though.

If it is part of some project like talk about what you are passionate about , then foul.
If he is doing it in the middle of a classroom or playground in a random way, then fair, but only if it is causing disruption to learning.

I mean come on, this is how people turn out to be homophobes. We are just like you straight people. If you tell your children that love can be between any sex/gender, it will create a safer environment for all concerned. Love is not about what label you want to put on it. Love is ultimately and will always be about the person you fall in love with. This child is amazing and his understanding at his age is no form of corruption. I have always been supportive of gays and I wouldn't have put it past myself to have done this when I was his age or even younger. Age does not matter. The younger you teach them that love is love, the less likely they are to commit hate crimes and the less likely they will hide things and if they do turn around one day and say that they are gay, they need to know that they are going to be accepted. That will reduce youth suicide rates too. So there. :] In the words of Ellen DeGeneres - "Be kind to one another."

According to the article the kid was going to deliver speech that a teacher and his mother wrote for him in support of the same sex marriage praising obama for doing the same. It is good that they did not allow this recruitment ploy to go on.

Homosexuality isn't a perversion. It's a natural occurrence. It happens in over thousands of species. And Being Gay isn't a choice. The ACTIONS are, but the ATTRACTIONS are NOT. There's a difference. Homosexuality isn't harmful, Eating your young is. And when 2 people of the same sex are together, they're both giving Romantic and/or Sexual Consent. So Homosexuality is both Harmless AND Consenting...

I support gay marriage, and I support freedom of speech. But we have no need for politics in education, and injecting it is only going to cause more problems in our dismal system.
