Federal Campaign Laws Require Donor's Occupation and Employer: Fair or Foul?

The Constitution of the United States of America guarantees Americans the right to free speech in the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights. The Founding Fathers wrote this to allow people to disagree with their government and to avoid recrimination or persecution for their opposition or support of any political beliefs.

Campaign finance laws now require Americans to list their occupation and employer when donating money to a political campaign. Laws also require publicly publishing the names of donors, the recipient and the amount. This can chill free speech because anyone can look up donations and use it to punish someone. For instance, an employer may secretly disqualify an applicant because he donated to a different political party.

The First Amendment of the Constitution: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
From the Mitt Romney 2012 donation form:
"Federal law requires us to obtain and report your occupation and the name of your employer. If you are not employed, please enter None."

From the Barack Obama 2012 donation form:
"Federal law requires us to use our best efforts to collect and report the name, mailing address, occupation, and employer of individuals whose contributions exceed $200 in an election cycle."

Campaign Donation Form

Does requiring information about employment violate the First Amendment? Or is it a fair federal law?

So when the boss works the prole to death, he could make a killing by killing him/her and selling the organs (or supplying Soyent Green?), could reap a good saving on pensions & insurance too.

"An election is coming. Universal peace is declared & the foxes have a sincere interest in prolonging the lives of the poultry" - George Eliot

Doesn't the above quote sound like Obama's 2008 candidacy speech?
Of which he won the Nobel Prize, if you read carefully BETWEEN (& Behind) the lines.

Too many personal details are required by every Tom, Dick + harry these days.
I was asked a couple of years ago to participate in a Nationwide research program on Ovarian Cancer, i agreed to do this, had blood tests + filled questionnaires out but they wanted more + more information which i felt was`nt relevant. They wanted so much personal info even regarding education qualifications !!, it was ridiculous + too intrusive.
I binned any further correspondence from them.

Why should we divulge that kind of personal information? We should not have to do so at all.

there is simply no excuse for the breach of privacy involved in this. People should still be allowed to donate anonymously and that includes not in any way insinuating that their employer is in any way involved in or against a political candidate based on what their employees are donating and to whom!

How does this harm free speech? This also works for the common people because we can see what the wealthy are actually doing with that money. Your boss can secretly disqualify you for anything. Hardly a strong arguement there. Hell you more likely to be disqualified for a job for something else, like race, age, sex, or job history.

Send it via (unsigned) money order paid with cash & no return address so there's no paper trail left behind to track you. Keep the receipt & send someone else (you don't like) a few weeks later to see if they cashed it or not. if s/he doesn't return, you know both has happened.

Not ONLY what Industries give to Cadidates, but also just what all they do with their revenue earned, relative to their overall operations and what all is going to reflect on their Income Statement and Balance Sheet . . . The Government should really also see about controlling our lives outside of the Board Room, in fact . . . Let's just say that, for instance, you were going to have Roast Beef and Mashed Potatoes and Gravy as well as .. . . . NO YOU ARE NOT!!! The Government shall determine what, exactly you are going to have for Dinner, tonight!!!

Places that have things donated to them should be happy anyone cares enough to do it. It seems people are more and more cynical these days, and especially if a charity involves the Church, the average person doesn't care to deal with them. That being the case, charities should be happy anyone cares enough to donate.

Currently, by law, it is fair. If we don't like the law, then press Congress to CHANGE the law. No, there is nothing in the Constitution regarding this as some argue, but there is nothing in the Constitution that tells us we must show ID to board a plane. Congress is given the power to make LAW.

As for an employer being able to see how we donate to political parties, we can also see how a potential employer, accountant, lawyer, doctor, store owner donates and chose if we want to patronize or not. I used it a couple of years ago to find a lawyer who was like-minded politically. No big deal!

There is nothing in the FEDERAL constitution that gives the FEDERAL government the right to force you to disclose your personal information in order to donate. This is just one more law of hundreds of thousands of laws created to control We The People. To gather more information on you, your spending habits, who you vote for, what your personal beliefs are and to possibly use it against you and or your employer. Or maby even so your employer or some "john doe" can use it against you.

It's no one's business where you work. Since you're donating from the goodness of your heart, why should they care? For that matter, if they're worried about you donating with blood money or drug/crime money, that should elate them considering they're crooks anyway.

What's that got to do with free speech? Is someone who speaks their mind "accusing" you of something? Was there a crime committed by someone exercising their Right to free speech? Going to court has nothing to do with free speech. If you really believe that there is any correlation, then you have a LOT of learning to do.
