FDA Affirms Safety of Silicone Breast Implants: Do You Think They're Safe?

After two days of discussion the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) affirmed the safety of silicone breast implants. That is, if you're not worried about ruptures, hardening, scarring, pain, infection, or asymmetry. Hmmm...that doesn't sound so safe to us.

“Women should feel assured that the FDA continues to believe that currently marketed silicone breast implants are safe,” said Dr. William Maisel, chief scientist for the FDA’s Center for Devices.

“We felt that way before the meeting, and we continue to feel that way after the presentations and discussions over the past two days,” Dr. Maisel said.

But not all of the patients and women's groups who testified agreed with Maisel's conclusion.

Diana Zuckerman, president of the National Research Center for Women and Families, a research and education group, believes that the two companies that manufacture silicone breast implants, Johnson & Johnson and Allergan, have done a poor job of studying patients who received the implants.

“And without proper data, we still don’t know how safe or effective they are and whether there are certain patients at risk for extremely negative outcomes,” Zuckerman told the expert panel.

Dr. Maisel agreed that the two companies need to do more follow-up with silicone breast implant patients, but that did not stop the FDA from affirming their safety.

What do you think about the FDA's ruling? Do you believe that silicone breast implants safe?

Not only do you have to create a huge unsightly incision, which, like any injury can become infected and fester, or have the stitching loosen. Also, the implants can move around and all that. I'd say if you naturally have big boobs, then yay for you but if your naturally flat chested, rock those high necked tops that make a busty girl look frumpy!

Just live your life as you are. There is no perfect way to be, and therefore there is nothing that's conclusively wrong either. As long as you are healthy and happy, then you are the best person you can be. No-one needs a breast implant or a lip plump to be beautiful, you already are.

The only time a breast implant is good is for anyone is after a mastectomy, as I know from my Granny, having an uneven chest can be really depressing. That's the only time it's good. Otherwise love yourself for who you are.

i don't think they're safe mentally or physically. it's not good to be so unhappy with oneself that you want to undergo elective, possibly life-threatening surgery to look the way you or someone else says you should look. And haven't u heard of all the people getting silicone poisoning from the implants leaking? that can kill people!! i personally think the only people that should get implants are male-to-female transgenders, and that's only to look like a female, and even they should be saline so they're safe. us natural born women should just find a way to be happy with what puberty gave us

To have them actually say that having silicone in your body is safe is one of the cruelest jokes that this government has passed onto us as American women. This is a foreign product in your body and our bodies fight against foreign bodies, I personally don't want a fight going on in my body. If I were to need my breasts removed due to cancer I would do what was done for a few years, have adipose tissue(fat) removed from my body and have breasts created by my own tissue. Yes you loose some volume over the first few months but it is your own tissue and your body will not reject it.
A man testified about this study at the FDA but I truly cannot believe that this man is not biased, even though he works for the FDA. For way too many years men have told women what is safe and not for women and as a 63 year old woman I have seen men proved wrong about women's bodies and what we can put into our bodies.

So true, they thought thalydomide was safe in the 60's and look what happened. I will go out with what I came in with and if it is not good enough for some, I'm sure it will please others. It is a travesty against women to make them believe they have to look like sex objects just to please. It has caused many unnecessary deaths.

There are also those with silicone intolerance based on their genetics. They are not informed and house silicone in their chest. I am one of these women. The math is simple, implants in -- autoimmune diseases, neurological dammage -- implants came out and.... wait for it.... No joint paint. No muscular pain. No hair loss. No fatigue. Cerebral blow-flow back to flowing ;0) So ladies and gentlemen, if a toddler can figure that one out -- why can't the FDA? A simple cheek swab for HLA testing could save lives. Stem Cell Enriched Fat grafting provided the natural and safe reconstructive surgery I should have had in the first place.

Medically, a person's body can cope with up to 20% poison before it goes into toxic shock and begins to decline. I am sure I'm not reaching that in the air or food - having said that, two balloons full of silicone bursting probably would reach that level sooner than later.

They are safe if used properly. They were for those had cancer and to have mammories removed. They are made to be used to just enhance figure. Too bad so many women are made to feel inadequate in that area and they feel the need to put themselves through surgery for larger breasts. My feeling is that most women are good in that area.

I think its all funny because the FDAs this its ok to soak our beef in Ammonia too.

If somebody wants fake boobs--let them have em... although I think that people who get implants prove that they are a "fake" superficial type of people. (unless it was reconstructive after surgery etc). ....but whatever makes them happy.

These implants are NOT the same silicone implants that were around years ago. These are a gel, that doesn't migrate through the body. From the negatives here, it sounds more like people are critical of implants in general, as opposed to silicone implants. If people are willing to take the risks associated with surgery, then go for it! Those who say just live with your body as is are ignoring the pressures put on people, particularly women, in this society. Change the way magazines portray their models and then tell me about living with what you were born with.

Not safe! Had silicone implants placed following bilateral mastectomies. Was not told what could happen to me. I was so sick I could barely walk from the pain. Total immune system breakdown, debilitating pain, lost the use of my arm...requiring shoulder surgery from labral tear & much, much more. Lost work. After I had them removed, my life is gradually coming back to me. Best decision in my life was to remove them! This is a billion dollar industry. The makers of these poisonous bags, together with the FDA simply don't care how many women they poison. I wonder if they would put them in themselves, their loved ones? I think not! They know what they are doing. Sleep well FDA. No worries for you after all!

Not everyones body reacts the same way to something. If someone is ill and needs a kidney and their body doesn't accept it, that doesn't mean that kidney transplants are bad, it just means their body didn't respond positively to it. Silicone implants are not "poison bags", there are many many women who have had success with breast implants. it all depends on how reputable the doctor and facility it (they should always tell you the risks involved, if they dont, that's a Big red flag to walk away and go to a different doctor!) and like I said, it also depends on how well your body responds to the implants.

Thank you for your comments Kaylee. Obviously if someone needs a kidney, God Bless if one is available for them. There are many pretests available to these people in need. That is a different subject. However, to many, many women, silicone implants are poisonous bags. There is no pretesting available to women to see if their bodies will reject them. It is not just about how reputable the doctor and facility is...it is the fact that too many women are losing their quality of life because of silicone implants, and it is continually ignored. And as far as you writing about reputable doctors, sorry Kaylee...you don't even want to go there. I have worked in the health system for half of my life...and you know absolutely nothing about what my situation is.

NO! breast implants are NOT permanent! you have to do some revisions after some time. Body's immune response to any foreign material results in hardening or fibrosis of the surrounding tissues. I believe silicone implants are also NOT SAFE!
