Fact Check: Obama Lies About Responsibility for Deficit
Yesterday, President Barack Obama told CBS News’ 60 Minutes that “ninety percent” of the reason the federal budget deficit has risen dramatically under his administration is because of his predecessor, George W. Bush. Not only is that a baldfaced lie--Obama borrowed more money in less than four years than Bush did in eight--but it is a lie that many in the media want to believe, as Andrew Sullivan of Newsweek demonstrates.
This after four years in which Obama failed to halve the deficit as promised; radically expanded spending; constantly pushed for higher taxes; ignored his own debt commission; and failed to achieve a “grand bargain” on the long-term budget.It is because of such willful self-delusion and fakery by significant portions of the media that Obama believes he can get away with lying about the deficit.
Yet consider the facts.
In Bush’s last fiscal year in office, FY2008, the deficit hit a new record high: $438 billion. The final spending bills for FY2009 were signed by President Obama--not Bush--and included spending that Democrats had failed to push through the Bush White House.
As of right now, the federal budget deficit for FY2012--Obama’s fourth and possibly last year in office--has reached $1.17 trillion, and counting. That is three times higher than Bush’s record-breaking deficit.
So about 37 percent, at most, of the deficit is due to Bush’s spending, tax cuts, etc. Obama’s catch-all excuse for his excess--the financial crisis--is absurd; little of his spending went to “shovel-ready” projects or real stimulus.
The fact is that two-thirds, at least, of the federal budget deficit is due to Obama and the Democrats alone. In addition, the record-breaking deficits signed into law by Bush were passed by a Democrat-controlled Congress.
By contrast, the Republicans have limited the growth of government spending since taking over the House of Representatives in the midterm elections of 2010. Both parties are at fault, but Obama much more so.

Obama simply MUST blame Bush, he MUST make it a Republican fault because all people not agreeing with the irresponsible spend, spend, spend policies of the left to pay for leftist programs MUST be silenced.
We are going socialist and NOTHING must be allowed to get in the way. I believe the reason is that now that the socialists and communists and sharia lovers have come out of the closet, they cannot go back into those closets. They gambled that Obama's Presidency would be sufficient to get the ball really rolling in their direction.
If something drastic doesn't happen soon, I predict that by 2013 we will be either a Socialist or Sharia country. And I don't believe a non-socialist President can prevent it.
But, what can you expect from a boy that, when he bothered to vote at all, voted "present" 90% of the time.
You'll undoubtedly have someone still try to lay the blame on President Bush while ignoring the fact that the democrats held control of congress for the last two years of his administration.
The really brain dead ones will bring up the clinton surplus. It just shows that they have no idea that a BUDGET surplus is not a pile of money sitting in the desk somewhere.
Also, as you undoubtedly already know, under President Obama Federal spending has slowed to its lowest rate since Dwight Eisenhower was in the White House.
Also, President Obama has added LESS to the National Debt with every penny he has spent than have the Bush tax giveaways to millionaires ALONE, and less than Bush's wars of lies in Iraq and Afghanistan ALONE. Where President Obama's policies have increased the national debt by about 16%, Bush DOUBLED our national debt and turned a #350 billion annual SURPLUS into the largest annual deficit this nation ever had.
Once President Obama's policies began to take effect we have seen consistent job growth DESPITE the Republicans in Congress blocking every jobs bill that has come along while doing absolutely NOTHING to create a single American job.
Ninety percent is an underestimate.
