Facebook Is Making Timeline Mandatory: Like It or Lose It?

Facebook's new Timeline format has been available since late December, but the network recently announced they'll be dropping the change on everyone. Soon. On Tuesday, Facebook posted a blog entry that read, "Over the next few weeks, everyone will get timeline. When you get timeline, you'll have 7 days to preview what's there now. This gives you a chance to add or hide whatever you want before anyone else sees it."

For those who are unfamiliar with Timeline, it's mostly an organizational change. The once iconic wall will be replaced with a vertical timeline, which their friends can easily scroll through. The most controversial change, in addition to the dramatic visual shift, is the ease with which friends can now view older posts. The Associated Press is calling it "essentially a scrapbook of your whole life on Facebook." That means you -- or your friends -- might stumble on conversations with an ex, or pictures from a long-forgotten party.

But that's what the trial period is for. Users can use that time to weed out the unmentionables and prepare for a new world. It seems like a risky move for Facebook, which reported drops in its userbase for the first time last year. To get a tour of the new layout, visit Facebook's Introducing Timeline page. Or just wait a week or too and sign on to Facebook. If you want to stay up on your friends' business, you'll have to learn one way or another.

    Dear Facebook,

As an addicted member of the facebook community, I have a friendly abbreviation that I hope you'll understand: K.I.S.S or Keep it Simple Stupid.

Simplicity is the way to go, making things fancy and complicated just makes things more annoying.

    Sincerely,
One of 5-6 or whatever billions of people who uses you.

I like the format of the profile, but I'm not sure of the relevance, as empirical data would suggest profiles are seldom visited by anyone but the owner. I can't imagine having to read through a timeline of likes and comments and all of the noise in between, while reading in a zig-zag pattern. Maybe I don't like it after all, but from a 10,000 foot view, it is a neat design. Design over function in this case, and considering the lack of need for the function, design takes the cake.

I am not a big Facebook user so I really do not care.
I only have a page so that I can get on facebook to see new videos or pictures of my grandson.
Besides that I really do not go to Facebook.

...anymore. I rarely used it to begin with, but deactivated my account. I have never really cared for it, and like it even less now.

I signed up for it when it first started but security issues kept me away. Then a couple of years ago I signed back in and my account was deleted because "SitOnMyFacebook is an inappropriate screen name".
So I guess they saved me the trouble....

LMAO! They frowned upon that, eh?

Other than them doing it, I didn't see where I could actually delete it, just deactivate it.

I agree, just wish I could get mine deleted! Never wanted to be on there to begin with. My brother wouldn't share some family photos unless I got them off his FB page...had to join to do so.

I tried it out and now I can't get it to go back. I later found out it would be mandatory eventually so it can't be ridden of.

It's ugly, chaotic, and there's just too damn much going on. I absolutely loath it.

I chose this because I LIKE the Timeline format (mostly for the cover picture) but I do NOT think it should be mandatory because I understand that many people hate it. It is a bit confusing at first (though after you use it for a bit, you do get used to it and it becomes easier to navigate.) But like I said, even though I like the Timeline format, I think Facebook should leave it optional.

Wah, wah, wah. How dare a company make changes to a service I use, yet pay absolutely nothing for? And in response to the current top comment, KISS stupid was what MySpace did. And who's still using MySpace other than undiscovered bands? You have to constantly update, or else there will be a new social networking site that is better and drives you out of business.

Not really. I use a pseudonym and fake information, and a spam email account. They don't know anything about the real me other than my birthday (although it's set to a different year).

That's the best way to use it, agreed. I see two types usually, ones that do as you do and share nothing much that is "real", and people that share absolutely every private detail about their lives: sex lives, phone numbers, drug habits, pics of their kids with iPhone GPS coordinates embedded...

You're right. They make their money from ads, but the point is that you don't give Facebook a dime for the service they provide you.

Still with how much time is spend on there i can guarantee you ive made them a decent amoutn of money.
and when they need people on there to get money from the adds they shouldnt be pushing something on us we hate.

You'll hate it for a bit. Then you'll get used to it and forget about what you didn't like about the new format. But how else is Facebook supposed to stay on top other than to innovate?

To be fair, there's nothing in the timeline that they couldn't see now if they looked for it.
