Facebook Is Making Timeline Mandatory: Like It or Lose It?

Facebook's new Timeline format has been available since late December, but the network recently announced they'll be dropping the change on everyone. Soon. On Tuesday, Facebook posted a blog entry that read, "Over the next few weeks, everyone will get timeline. When you get timeline, you'll have 7 days to preview what's there now. This gives you a chance to add or hide whatever you want before anyone else sees it."

For those who are unfamiliar with Timeline, it's mostly an organizational change. The once iconic wall will be replaced with a vertical timeline, which their friends can easily scroll through. The most controversial change, in addition to the dramatic visual shift, is the ease with which friends can now view older posts. The Associated Press is calling it "essentially a scrapbook of your whole life on Facebook." That means you -- or your friends -- might stumble on conversations with an ex, or pictures from a long-forgotten party.

But that's what the trial period is for. Users can use that time to weed out the unmentionables and prepare for a new world. It seems like a risky move for Facebook, which reported drops in its userbase for the first time last year. To get a tour of the new layout, visit Facebook's Introducing Timeline page. Or just wait a week or too and sign on to Facebook. If you want to stay up on your friends' business, you'll have to learn one way or another.

    Dear Facebook,

As an addicted member of the facebook community, I have a friendly abbreviation that I hope you'll understand: K.I.S.S or Keep it Simple Stupid.

Simplicity is the way to go, making things fancy and complicated just makes things more annoying.

    Sincerely,
One of 5-6 or whatever billions of people who uses you.

I' am sorry hunni I love the layout on timeline I know it effects the tablet when logging on but I think face book should make it so that it doesn't mess up graphics on tablet which takes it longer to load. Gotta admit it it's a nicer layout :P :D :P

I'm usually on the other side of this type of issue...I transferred my page to timeline early and have been living with it for over a month now...the cover picture is cool, and the concept in general I like but they way the page draws feels a bit like a jumble. It mis-sizes pictures and has a very random feel. I wanted to change back but found out it was locked -in...I like progress and innovation but I have to be honest this change bugs...

I tried it and liked it at first, but now I don't because its hard to navigate and find photo albums and stuff of that nature. I still like some of the things about it, like the cover picture behind your profile picture, but the rest of it I don't like.

I think we should have the option to keep our profile the way we want it as long as it's not offensive or derogatory in any way. Why change something if it's working and everyone is happy? After all,the PEOPLE on FB are what have made FB so lucrative and successful,so shouldn't it be the people's decision as to how they want to keep their profile?

I was told that Facebook is tracking it's users. The less the government or anyone else know about me, the better I like it. If I could, I would be paid in silver coins, in cash. That way the government won't know anything about me. If you guessed that I do not trust this government, you are right.

As others have mentioned Facebook is quickly becoming a national database of a lot of personal information. I recently read an article that they intend to search on keywords related to political discourse. It seems they've become the civilian wing of the NSA.
People need to realize privacy is hard to get back once it's lost.
Avoid posting anything on Facebook you wouldn't say in front of an entire assembly of church, school or community.

Once you get used to it, it's not really as chaotic as it first appears. The time line actually puts things in some kind of order so you can look them up - whereas before, everything was very random and unorganized. How did we ever find anything? By changing the dates on your photos (scanned pix, for instance have the "scan date" rather than the "event date" you can create a nice, cohesive picture of how you got to where (and who) you are today. I don't have much to hide, so I don't mind at all, and it was quite cathartic putting in the important dates in my life. :)

I really just don't give a fcuk... I don't even know why I am wasting my time commenting on such a mundane topic. I guess I'm just bored and at least this question has a "don't use" answer, unlike the stupid "Super-bowl" and "Blake Griffin" questions which do not include this "I don't care" option (like everybody who is anybody gives a sh!t about it).

I like having the option. Personally, I don't like timeline. It looks cool and organized, but I can't find anything I'm looking for. My boyfriend has timeline and asked me to read something he had posted. I looked all over his profile for his post, but it was nowhere to be found. As a daily Facebook user, I find timeline very frustrating and unnecessary.

I used to use facebook, but found it was a trap in some ways - friends identitites have been stolen via it, and who wants to remember some old mistakes, forever out there on the net - I don't. This Sodahead is good for finding the temperature of opinion out there on the net, but facebook is not as good as I would like. I think the timeline is good, if you want to tell your lifestory out in the public domain, but personally, I don't. I would worry also if I put something out there and then find it was a mistake, and if I couldn't delete it, that would be not good. I shall wait and see - my favourite thing to do, right now
