Facebook Is Buying Instagram: Lovely or Lame?

The premise behind Instagram is simple: Make photosharing easy and offer a handful of popular filters. In just over a year, that concept alone has landed the app more than 30 million users and the No. 1 spot on Apple's iPhone App of the Year list in 2011. Despite being free, Instragram and its 13 employees have managed to generate enough public interest to receive a $1 billion offer from Facebook.

Some feel this is a frightening sign, evidence that Facebook's IPO will put the company "in a position to be predatory." Though Facebook has claimed it will continue to develop Instagram as an independent app, the massive investment means they're trying to get their foot in every door they can, just to maintain a choke-hold on social media -- not to mention the privacy issues already haunting them. Do you think the fact that Facebook is buying Instagram is lovely -- or lame?

    I don't like market width expansion power plays. If I put my mind to it I think I could think of something better to do with the money, like help some of the families with kids, living out of their cars, that can't find work anywhere!! But that's just me.

    I wouldn't actually use the word lovely but that's the market. If they want to buy it, if they can afford it, and if the owners want to sell, and it doesn't violate laws, then what's the big deal. It's their money.

    This is very strange! Instagram has a few retro-filters to colorize pictures. But it is not worth 1 billion dollars. Just before the purchase an investment company put up $50million dollars for Insagram. I smell insider trading and shifty business here.

    That's what investing is all about.....the potential. They received 50 mil in financing which put the value of the company at 500 mil. With the sale they doubled their money. Every tech company you would recognize started this way. How does Sodahead make its bills. The bandwidth they use is very expensive to maintain.
