The woman got fired for using Facebook on her sick day?

A woman got fired from a Swiss insurance agency after being caught on facebook while out sick. The woman claimed she could not go to work, and that she couldn't sit a computer, that she had to lay in the dark. However, an employee at the insurance company saw that her Facebook account had been active. This destroyed all trust the insurance company had in her. The accused and fired woman admitted to using Facebook on her iPhone, but not on her computer.

Have you ever been caught playing hooky? (calling in sick when you weren't?)

Wow! This seems a bit out of touch with reality. My goodness, with all the smart phones, blackberries and other gadgets people can access the Internet from one would think a company would give the benefit of the doubt. Broke all trust my behind. Perhaps there is more to this than we are aware of, but if not then I would not wish to work for a company who obviously creates an atmosphere where one employee feels the need to police and tattle on coworkers and get them fired.

It is hard to believe that her data is not safe. That is why I do not like facebook. If she is just reading a message and activated her account, it is no crime. Sitting on the computer the whole day at the company is different!!

There was no such site when I was still working. The last time I would have been able to use a computer while working was in 1988-I was still using a Selectric electric typewriter to write my reports, and the dispatcher used teletype to talk to other agencies. Facebook?? What's that??

No question that the lady was stupid, and perhaps should not be employed for any job in which brains are key. That said, it's scary to have the feeling of being incessantly watched. No wonder so many people are on edge. Can they be blamed?

I don't believe that just because she was on facebook means she was playing hooky. She was probably in bed, in the dark, and used her iPhone to go on Facebook. It doesn't mean she was in any condition to work. It just means she had access to the internet.

Big deal just because the woman was "well" enough to use a computer doesn't mean she was able to come into work. What if she spread germs to others while working? Then they would have been saying she should have stayed at home.

Well, with Facebook everywhere, does that mean that she really was sitting at the computer? That's exactly why none of my managers are friends with me on Facebook. Just ridiculous. I update mine by text anyway.

Yet another reason to not have facebook. So many people have put the dumbest things up and got caught. Why on earth would you post a picture of yourself smoking pot or other questionable pictures. Once its on the internet, you can't take it back. Besides, I mess around on SH all the time at work. I don't need to call in sick to do it. If I'm going to call in sick, either I'm passed out in bed or doing something more fun than facebook.

Came close once, when I was a kid. I worked at a fast food joint when I was 17. It was enough money to keep me in beer, marijuana, and gas, so it was fine at the time.

A few friends and I all decided to call in sick one day and go to Disneyland, the only problem being Disneyland opened at 8am, all of our jobs also started at either 8am or 9am, so we would have to call in from the park.

There used to be these phones that were scattered all around our country, and they usually where in booths, hence the name, "Phone Booths". We decided when we reached the park we would head straight for a bank of phone booths that were over at the CircleVison 360 theater, and make our calls there.

All the phone booths were taken except for a few, new-fangled "speaker-phones", so I was forced to call my boss from one of those.

I had never used a speaker phone before, so I was unaware of the how the acoustics. might work. I found out as soon as I spoke with my boss.

I started off telling him I was sick, and wouldn't be in. He was cool about it, and then he said, "Where are you calling from?" I was shocked by the question, but kept my cool, so I told him I was at home, on my phone there.

"Really? Sounds like you are on a speaker phone!"

I of course lied, and he bought it, but the rest of the day all I did was worry that he may have called my home back just to be sure I was telling the truth. I lucked out, though, he had trusted me and not a word was never spoken about it again.

This woman's firing is another example of the hypocrisy so rampant throughout "developed" societies across the world. With no first-hand knowledge of the situation, I would still be willing to be that superiors who fired her have themselves played hooky at some point (likely several times) in their lives. Another example of the double-standard holding sway: those at the top trampling on the less powerful.

But seriously though WTF. Gosh no not facebook the worlds at an end. Using facebook isnt exactly the same as sitting doing work all day is it? Gosh how pathetic.
People are coming up with worse excuses for firing people everday.
