Every Republican Senator Said NO To Equal Pay For Women. Do YOU Support Equal Pay For Equal Work ?

An election-year Democratic measure designed to ensure that women don't face pay discrimination was blocked Tuesday by Republicans who complained that the bill was politically inspired and would reward trial lawyers at the expense of employers.

The motion, which needed 60 votes to succeed, got only 52, not one from a Republican.

President Obama issued a statement criticizing Republicans for putting "partisan politics ahead of American women and families."

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada, standing at a news conference with pay equity advocate Lilly Ledbetter, accused Republicans of "wanting to stick their heads in the sand" about the longstanding issue of women being paid less than men. "But it's clear where Democrats stand," Reid said.

The bill, which Democrats said would close loopholes in the 1963 Equal Pay Act, would require employers to prove that differences in pay were related to job performance, not gender; would prevent employers from forbidding employees from sharing salary information with each other; and would allow women who believe they were discriminated against to sue for damages.

Democrats acknowledged privately that they expected to make political gains with women by pressing to close the pay gap, which they said has women earning just 77 cents on the dollar compared with men.

Republicans, fearful that Democrats were trying to portray them as insensitive to women, argued that they oppose pay discrimination but disagree with the Democrats' bill, which was written without their input. Republicans remained largely silent about the issue in the days leading up to the vote, even as Democrats, led by the president, made an all-out push for the legislation.

Did you not understand? It is equal pay for equal work. Unions have enforced that in the past but when a company can get a women to do a job for less they often do just that.

Some men will never get this because they feel a threat towards their masculinity. I worked in the building trades for almost ten years and anytime I started a new job with different men I saw the smirk on some faces. Wiped that off the first day and got my equal pay (Local #334 out of Detroit) lol ;)

good for you thats good to hear.

just a question do you think that might have something to do with businesses going bankrupt or a business going over sea to China.
higher pay means more money the business loses over time the business might run low or out of money because of to many workers.

Just a throughtnot trying to be a meny or anything. Me and some friends started our own business. We been talking aboout moving up to Canada because it simply costs to much in the USA.

well I think it is Unamerican (as much as I hate that word) to move workers out of country unless you are selling your product of services there.
the biggest problem is with medium to large sized business doing so
and yes you are absolutely right, it is usually much cheaper to produce a product in Asia and simply pay to have it shipped to the US. but that also creates a wave of other issues with the US economy now that (using a round number for example) 500,000 jobs are in Asia because the larger companies can make a bigger profit by paying the Chinese the equivilent(for example) of $20 a day for the same job they have to pay an American $13 an hour.
you can also argue that the standard of employment cost a lot more. is it wrong for the FDA to demand food be free of Disease or that Osha says a construction site must provide hardhats etc.
and like you I am not trying to be mean or anything. I am just stating why our shipping jobs overseas or to canada makes our economy more fragile much quicker than simply giving women equal pay

If the damn taxes were lower I would be all fine and happy with equal pay for men and women but the fact is everything but air you are taxed for thats b ecause of the damn democrats and liberals always saying make more taxes or higher taxes.
esintualy saying chase away all businesses and the people who make them.
no one can afford to pay women higher pay checks or even guys for that matter. taxes are what is killing the businesses in the usa.

This is not a Republican vs Democrat issue. This is corporate greed sucking our country dry and until we can come together on a common ground it will only get worse for our children :(

the biggest expenditure in the US is nationa defense. Isnt that a republican interest more than democrat?
It is not taxes, it is the cost of labor. as I said earlier, why should Verizon pay a tech i the US $15 an hour when it can pay a tech in Pakistan $5 an hour?
so in reality not the world where liberals a blamed because even with taxes being pretty much the lowes in 40 years or so, and even during the republican run congress, white house and supreme court in the early 2000s, businesses were shipping more jobs over seas than ever before.

Do me a favor Dion, don't use "simply giving woman equal pay". When I was a young mother trying to survive with two sons it was the hardest time in my life and it sucked! Other than that I agree with you ;)

I have to disagree. some jobs are very stressful and physically much more strenuous for most women (note i did not say all because I know some really tough gals)
even in the military and police academies, women have must slower running qualifications and pushups/sit ups to pass. jobs like being a furniture mover, football player or garbage man etc are more physically taxing.
but if a woman is strong enough to do, I say give her the job and give her the pay.

Your entitled to your opinion though I have to disagree. I didn't stand around with a stop sign looking pretty even though I am and I worked on some of the biggest jobs in the Detroit area in the building trades. I have also moved furniture and my back is still fine. Would I move a piano down a flight of stairs alone? No because I'm in my right mind. It's not about being tough, it's about knowing HOW without physical damage. Laborers in construction always work with a partner and a knowledge about physical safety vs weight and gravity. Give me a smart man or woman and we can move 1,000 pounds without a hitch (or with lol). Don't forget the female runners in the Olympics. Either you can or you can't no matter woman or man but as long as there are nay slayers against my gender I will fight it till death do us part.
  • Dion Pr... oldlady 2012/06/12 23:24:54

    wll oldlady facts are facts.
men are naturally physically stronger tha women. that is a fact.
lets use the olympics for example:
who is the fastest in equal sports like freestyle swimming? men
who is stronger in weight lifting? men
who hits harder and faster in boxing? men
who runs the fastest in any track and field event? men
these are records Old lady. so no matter what you say, women are not as physically strong (in general) as men. It is the way God made us.
    Our bodie's are made differently.
now Im no chauvanist. I know plenty of women who can outrun, out benchpress and out swimm many many many men. but that is not the norm.

    Facts:
Woman has always been told they are the weaker sex physically but this keeps changing and will continue to do so.
Being a man does not automatically make you physically stronger than a woman.
We can stand more physical pain than a man.
    We're not done yet.
    There is no norm.

In case you edit that low life remark let's do a repeat:
"it was your mom actually, and she called to ask if I wanted a BJ"

Your a perfect example of an immature ass who can't take any criticizing from a woman and directs it straight to referencing his penis. Scary to think you live near any little girls. Bet you'd like to teach them a thing or two :/

no, I dont only see woman as sex objects... just your mom.
and you didnt critisize. you made false statements that women (in general) are physically as strong or stronger than men. that is a falicy with nothing to back it up.
and I dont teach girls anything, I did however teach your mom all kinds of wonderful filthy, FILTHY things, some might still be illegal in the bible belt states.

Too bad Pelosi is against equal pay for women in congress. When it was pointed out that women are NOT paid equally in congress, her response was that "it's a different world."
So ChiChi, why don't the dems lead by example instead of trying to make others do what they refuse to do themselves? Why won't they give equal pay in congress? Are you asinterested inthat as you are in smearing the repubs?
