Ever feel like punching rude people in a theater?

SEATTLE — With Celine Dion crooning, Leonardo DiCaprio proclaiming himself "king of the world" and the Titanic taking on water — all in 3-D — the perfect scene for a date was set.

But the on-screen spectacle was interrupted by talking, followed by the tossing of popcorn in a Kent, Wash., multiplex. It proved too much for one man, who allegedly responded in a manner countless moviegoers have no doubt considered when encountering a rude audience member.

Yong H. Kim, 31, allegedly got up in the darkened theater and confronted the chatterboxes who were tossing popcorn at Kim and his date. When they responded with laughter, say King County prosecutors, Kim threw a punch, knocking a tooth out of the mouth of one of his alleged tormentors.

It wasn't until later, when police got involved, that Kim learned the recipient of the punch was a 10-year-old boy.

Kim was arrested and released after the April 11 incident at the AMC Theater at Kent Station, said Kent police Assistant Chief Pat Lowry. He was charged last week in King County Superior Court with second-degree assault, which carries a penalty of three to nine months in jail.

In his 32 years with Kent police, Lowery said, he's never heard of someone throwing a punch over a similar encounter in a movie theater. "I was really quite stunned. This is not something we see," Lowery said Tuesday.

Efforts to reach Kim, who lives in Auburn, Wash., were unsuccessful.

When officers were called to the theater at 10:41 p.m. on April 11, they were met in the lobby by the 10-year-old boy and his mother, who wasn't present when the alleged assault occurred.

The boy told police he was watching the movie when a man "stepped over a row of seats" and told him that he "paid a lot of money to see this movie," Detective Gerald Gee wrote in his report. The boy said that the man, who was wearing 3-D glasses, struck him in the face with a closed fist, causing his nose to bleed and a tooth to fall out.

The boy claimed he didn't know why he was punched.

Police walked into the theater and asked Kim to come out to the lobby. Kim told the officers that he asked the group to be quiet. When they didn't, he said, he struck one of the boys with an open hand, Gee's report said.

"I got so mad that it just happened," Kim later told Gee, according to the report.

Ryan Noonan, spokesman for AMC Theatres, said "we strongly encourage guests to be respectful of their fellow moviegoers, and to report any disturbance to an AMC associate, so that we may handle it directly."

Happily, I don't have to. That's what theater ushers are for. And if a theater management can't control crowds better than that, I will take my business elsewhere.

Or I would, if I went to movies regularly. I don't. They cost too much, and frankly I don't want to make people think that I approve of the unedifying junk that Hollywood cranks out these days.

I've felt like it at least. Never would, not worth the hassle or having an assault record.

Of course I never punched anyone, but definitely have felt like doing it. Not just people being loud and talking on their cell phones, but people bumping the back of the seat -- that really irritates me. I have turned around and asked people to stop that before.

But not if they are ten. The mother should have been with those boys, or another adulst and this whole situation could have been avoided.

Yes they desearve it (like I wrote above, as long as they are not a young kid) but you shouldn't do it. You can go to the people working there and they will kick them out after a couple complaints.

Precisely the reason I don't go to cinemas any more. There have been maybe two films in the last 35 years that I feel would have benefited by the big screen...MAYBE. Invariably they reek of nasty sneakers and sweat, the concessions are far overpriced, the movies pretty much suck anyway...certainly not worth the ticket prices, and theater management is reluctant to confront the mass of rude folks who ruin the experience for others. I can generally watch it at home in six months anyway, where I can pause it if I need to hit the bathroom, get a brand of soda that I actually like or any snack I want for a tenth of the cost, and I can have as many cigarettes as I wish with out missing a second of the movie.

Similar happened to me some yrs ago, kid was playing a game boy or radio in theater. I got up and asked him to turn it off. He refused. Then I went to get the manager, a kid himself, who was too scared to deal with the situation. Told him not to worry, I'll be there. We got the kid with the noise out in the lobby. And I took over from there, ordering the kid to leave the theater. He bitched and cussed me out. But he did leave. Course I missed some of the film, but was satisfied I got rid of the lil A-hole!
As to getting punched, if yer gonna poke a bear...expect to get bit!! People think they can do whatever they please, wherever and to whoever...hopefully the 10 yr. old learned a lesson, albeit...the hard way. It could have been much worse!
Now a days, I watch all my flicks in my own home theater...screw the cell phone, talking, gang banger crowds that go to public theaters to make trouble...who needs 'em!!

I was once a movie theater manager so, of course, I wanted to punch plenty of patrons in the face, on, nearly, a daily basis. Didn't do it though. It would be considered highly unprofessional and, most likely, landed me in cuffs.

That sounds like a good idea, but then, you don't know if the person would punch YOU for doing that. Unfortunately, there's a lot of putting up with stuff, otherwise possibly putting ourselves in jeopardy.

Oh, I wasn't criticizing.. actually, I think it might be a good way to get a person's attention. I feel I would react to something, also. We just never know who we might be dealing with.. since people go off. (It's been said we shouldn't even look at others who do something rude or dangerous in traffic, since you don't know what the person is capable of doing.. it's crazy).

Anyone who feels like punching someone because they are rude has the same need for counseling as the person being rude. In fact, more so.

He should have gone to a manager after asking them to be quiet. It's never acceptable to punch a 10 year old, no matter what they've done. If it was my kid he punched he would have been carried out on a stretcher.

Not punching, no. But, I have many times said, "shhh" or "Please, be quiet, I can't hear the film." I hate rude people and if they are being rude, why would I be equally rude and punch them? As I taught my children, two wrongs don't make a right.

I agree. I've been to two movie theaters in the past 15 years - both times in a family outing. Most recently we saw the 3-D Lion King, and before that it was the Half Blood Prince. And in that time period I have neither rented nor purchased a movie. There's so little worth watching!
