Dem lawmakers urge study, call for end of gay-blood ban

June 11, 2012, 06:25PM
by Cheryl Wetzstein

A group of Democratic lawmakers Monday urged Health and Human Services (HHS) officials to move swiftly on a pilot study on blood-donor policies so that the "indefensible" and "discriminatory" ban on donations by gay and bisexual men can be lifted.

The HHS pilot study should explore ways to distinguish high-risk men who have sex with men (MSM) from low-risk MSM "to avoid deferring low-risk, healthy, and viable blood donors from within the MSM community from donating blood," Sen. John Kerry, Massachusetts Democrat and Rep. Mike Quigley, Illinois Democrat, wrote in a letter to HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.

Ten other Senate Democrats plus Sen. Bernie Sanders, a Vermont independent who caucuses with them, also signed.

For instance, the donor questionnaire "could collect information on whether or not the donor is in a monogamous relationship, or if the donor engages in effective preventive measures," they wrote.

This would allow the risk level of all potential donors to be assessed, regardless of sexual orientation, the lawmakers said, adding that it is "indefensible" that "healthy gay and bisexual men continue to be banned for life" while "a man who has had sex with an HIV-positive woman" can give blood after waiting only one year.

Current U.S. policy, established during the early years of the HIV/AIDS crisis, permanently defers any man who has had sex with a man since 1977. In 2010, federal advisors, who heard reports on blood safety from HIV-infected persons, declined to change the donor policy but called for new research.

The same Democrat party passed the 'Pedophile Protection Act' S-909 in 2010. Doesn't everyone see the pattern here?

Make it a minimum 10 year prison sentence for a gay to give blood. AIDS is STILL fatal, regardless of the propaganda otherwise. When a gay dies, their friends cover up the cause--at least around here. Two gays have died here in recent years and both, according to what was put in the paper, were due to "a short illness" (which is a lie).

CDC, slide 3, shows that 77% of AIDS transmissions are male to male.
    Heterosexual transmission is 12.2%.

When AIDS came to the US it was an exclusively gay male disease. That is because of the method of transmission. The virus transmits easily through the rectal walls, but not through healthy vaginal walls. (Journal of the AMA) This information is well known to us older folks. The MSM is suppressing this information for 'politically correct' reasons.

They need the blood, but they can't get it. But they can't get blood from gay males because of "possible" infections. They have to screen all the blood anyway, and if they alerted specific people who are infected and can not give blood, it would be much easier. Also, they also ban women who have slept with men who have slept with men. It's freaking crazy.

But it really doesn't matter. We should really BAN BLOOD TRANSFUSIONS completely and use artificial blood substitutes. It is proven that the recovery rate for those who have bloodless procedures vs blood transfusions is far better for those who use bloodless procedures, that includes organ transplants and heart valve replacements.

KEEP the Ban. I am not a pc lefty, and sure as heck do NOT want the chance of an illness! If ever I should need surgery I have already made it clear that I will get blood stored from family, or my own. Reason I'm so adamant? Aunt had to have blood, that worked out real well, she got TAINTED blood. Hep C and died from it in 2003. Fatal, just like AIDS, No Thanks!

Banning someone from donating blood just because they are gay is not right. Many gay people are tested regularly, and practice safe sex. Also, the ban is only on men, not gay women, which is also not right.

That would prove, then, that they really are trying to protect the transference of a deadly disease? Michael is banned also because of his lifestyle choice, going to a country that has deadly diseases. Using this to push homosexuality reverence is just wrong.

There is a window of six months when a person could be positive for HIV and they haven't developed detectable antibodies in the blood system. That doesn't mean that they haven't got the disease. It just means that it won't show up in blood bank testing:

All blood products in the U.S. are screened by ELISA assays for
several infectious agents, including: HIV 1/2, HTLV I/II, HBV, HCV,
Syphillis, Hepatitis B core, and a liver enzyme ALT, indicative of
hepatic infections. Some blood donations are also tested for CMV, a
more common virus that has devestating effects in immunocompromised
individuals, such as cancer patients and transplant recipients.

In addition to these laboratories, all donors are screened through
questionaires that meet or exceed FDA requirements.

The Red Cross and other blood banks routinely test blood donations for

might be infected, go get a blood test. Many cities offer free
anonymous HIV testing. Contact your local public health service office
    for details.

This is particularly important if you think you might have been
infected within the last six months, since there's the risk that you
are indeed infected, but do not yet have antibodies to HIV.

Blood donation is a fine thing to do--but how will you feel if you
donate, then a month later you find out through some other means that
you're HIV+? We're supposed to be making a gift of life, not death.

The following article discusses how blood banks use the information,
if you have tested positive for HIV antibodies. In addition to your
possible role in killing another person, donating blood to obtain a
free HIV test also risks your anonymity.

There is a much higher risk of getting HIV from men having sex with men. For the record AABB won't take blood from intravenous drug users either. Just because facts "offend" the homosexual community, won't make facts go away.

    Fast Facts
Gay and bisexual men are more severely affected by HIV than any other group in the United States (US).
Among all gay and bisexual men, blacks/African Americans bear the greatest disproportionate burden of HIV.
From 2006 to 2009, HIV infections among young black/African American gay and bisexual men increased 48%.

Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM)1 represent approximately 2% of the US population, yet are the population most severely affected by HIV. In 2009, MSM accounted for 61% of all new HIV infections, and MSM with a history of injection drug use (MSM-IDU) accounted for an additional 3% of new infections. That same year, young MSM accounted for 69% of new HIV infections among persons aged 13–29 and 44% of infections among all MSM. At the end of 2009, an estimated 441,669 (56%) persons living with an HIV diagnosis in the US were MSM or MSM-IDU.

Among all MSM, white MSM accounted for 11,400 (39%) new HIV infections in 2009. The largest number of new infections (3,400) occurred in those aged 40–49.
Among all MSM, black/African American MSM accounted for 10,800 (37%) new HIV infections in 2009. Whereas new HIV infections were relatively stable among MSM overall from 2006–2009, they increased 34% among young MSM—an increase largely due to a 48% increase among young black/African American MSM aged 13–29.
Among all MSM, Hispanic/Latino MSM accounted for 6,000 (20%) new HIV infections in 2009. The largest percentage of new infections (45%) occurred in those aged 13–29.
