WikiLeaks chief Julian Assange was granted political asylum by Ecuador on Thursday, setting up a standoff with the British government, which has vowed to block his exit from the country.

The announcement was made by the Ecuadorian foreign minister, Ricardo Patiño. He said that Ecuador was granting Assange political asylum because it believed he was being persecuted for his actions as the head of WikiLeaks.

"The Ecuador government, loyal to its tradition to protect those who seek refuge with us at our diplomatic missions, has decided to grant diplomatic asylum to Mr. Assange," he said. Applause greeted his announcement.

Assange remains holed up in the Ecuadorian embassy in London, where he fled to avoid extradition charges to Sweden. He is wanted there to face allegations of rape, but he fears that he will be swiftly transferred to the United States, where he says he could be prosecuted for leaking classified material through WikiLeaks. Sweden has denied that it has any such intentions.

Assange isn't a "suspected rapist", he is an alleged rapist. The allegedly false allegations were made by two alleged liars.

There was absolutely no need to put the word rapist in the title. Innocent until proven guilty, remember? Alas, it's often exactly the other way around in Western countries nowadays. Which, in my opinion, is exactly why someone who wants to see Assange behind bars for entirely different reasons chose to go this route. They could have made up anything, but they chose false rape allegations because they knew that the misandrist public would find him guilty as soon as the accusation was made.

Since you posted a photo of Assange with the word rapist next to it, here are the photos of two "suspected" liars and false rape accusers who were probably paid to ruin an innocent man's life and didn't think twice about it:

suspected liars false rape accusers paid ruin innocent mans life

Once again, these two shady women, Sofia Wilen and Anna Ardin, are suspected of being man-hating false rape accusers. Ardin is also suspected of having ties to the CIA and US-financed anti-Castro and anti-communist groups. Fair is fair.

I'm not supporting rapists, I'm supporting the principle that a person is innocent until proven guilty.

I also support the crazy idea that it's ridiculous when a woman goes home with a celebrity in order to have sex with him, does exactly that, has breakfast with the celebrity the next day (Wilen) or throws a party in this celebrity's honor and tells her Twitter followers that she's with "the world’s coolest smartest people" and that "it’s amazing" (Ardin) -- and then decides much later on that she was raped and simply didn't realize it at the time.

I support the concept that a person is not automatically a victim because she's a helpless little woman and the alleged offender happens to be a big bad man, even when the evidence tells an entirely different story. But that is for a court of law to decide. And until the day that happens, Julian Assange remains an innocent person.

How easy it is to accuse the victims when the alleged perpetrator is a celebrity......who think they are above the law.

Asylum is not open to criminal or alleged criminals.....Britain doesn't have to accept foreign criminals using British soil as a refuge whether that be in a foreign Embassy or Consulate. Foreign Embassies and Consulates should not be allowed to undermine the Due Process Of Law in the countries where they are guests.

Apparently it is very easy in Sweden. And there is no evidence that Assange thought himself to be above the law. His journalistic activities didn't violate the laws of his country (which might have been the reason behind the rape allegations).

Sweden offered Assange the oportunity of having the Swiss court to come to him in the Ecuadorian Consulate, to answer questions about the alledged rapes. The fact that he refused this olive branch, would to any sensible observer, suggest that Assange maybe does have a case to answer to.

The fact, that he is quilty of paying employed government employees to pass top secret and classified infromation which ultimately placed the lives of American and other NATO troop's lives in danger. Does that make him an innocent bystander on the charge of SPYING or being a SPYMASTER for forgeign concerns.

"The fact that he refused this olive branch, would to any sensible observer, suggest that Assange maybe does have a case to answer to."

To the sensible observer of rape trials in Western countries that were based on false allegations, it suggests that Assange is very aware of the fact that a man can't win in such a trial unless he has irrefutable evidence of his innocence.

The Hofstra case is a prominent example. A female student accused three boys of gang rape. The three male students were immediately arrested and their names leaked to the media, while the accuser's name was kept confidential. The media published photos and treated the naked allegation as a proven rape. As a result, one of the boys received death threats while he was in jail.

Luckily, the three had video evidence which proved beyond doubt that the group sex was very much consensual and the supposed victim greatly enjoyed it. The false accuser wasn't aware that she had been videotaped. When confronted with the evidence, she admitted that she lied because she didn't want her new boyfriend to hear rumors of the consensual orgy and think of her as a slut.

Had it not been for the video tape, the three young men would have been innocently imprisoned for up to 25 years. After they were released, the countless blogs and ...

Had it not been for the video tape, the three young men would have been innocently imprisoned for up to 25 years. After they were released, the countless blogs and news articles that falsely branded them as rapists remained online, where future employers can easily find them.

The DA stated later in an announcement that "a crime did not happen ... in Hofstra", as if false rape allegations were perfectly legal. And apparently they are, because the false accuser didn't face any charges. The DA's excuse: She was afraid of scaring real victims into silence. Apparently, the victimization of falsely accused men wasn't a concern for her.

There have been several cases of false rape allegations which all have one thing in common, namely that the accused had evidence of his innocence. Most alleged rapists don't have any such evidence and are deemed guilty by default, based on nothing but allegations. I'm sure Assange is very aware of this. Innocent or not, there is no way that he won't be convicted simply for being accused by two women.

PS: Who knows how many men are innocently in jail because of false rape accusations. An Austrian man was recently released after several years, because his stepdaughter couldn't live with her guilt anymore and decided to come out with the truth. She had falsely accused her stepfather of sexual abuse when she was a minor, simply because she wanted to get rid of her mother's new husband. That's the legal situation nowadays. If you are a man, you're guilty until proven innocent.

According to Alfred P. Doolittle, shrewd and cheerfully unemployed working-class nemesis of Henry Higgins in “My Fair Lady,” some poor people are deemed “deserving” of charity — the ones who seem miserable and wretched — and others, the “undeserving”, are not. We divide sexual abuse victims into similar groups: those who deserve justice because they previously lived a chaste life, and the unchaste others, who did not.

If the victim has previously been sexually impure, then who can trust anything she says? If she were innocent, what was she doing in that neighborhood at that hour dressed that way? Knowing the drill, most victims of sexual assault have nursed their wounds, their traumas and their resentments privately; those intrepid few who came forward were usually ruined in the process.

We now call this “blaming the victim,” but it took decades to understand that the criminal justice system was complicit because it encouraged character assassination of the complainant.

I haven't brought up sexual abuse cases, but cases of false rape accusations. The treatment of the innocently accused and the automatic assumption of their guilt in these cases shows that Assange WILL end up in jail if he faces trial, no matter if he's innocent or not. Therefore, his unwillingness to stand trial is no admission of guilt in my opinion.

Good Decision for who? That will be his jail cell. As for rape, don't know, he is only wanted for questioning and hasn't been convicted. One of the girls is a spook and spreds her legs when the job called for it. Which isn't often as most spooks are gay. For that matter Assange is probably gay too. Thats how he gets his info. Reason for not going to Sweden is that he would be extradited to US for espionage charges, have a military trial and wing up in Gauntanamo.

What is really troubling in all this is where he stayed while on trial for extradition in the UK. Assange has served his “house arrest” as a guest of millionaire Vaughan Smith at his Norfolk estate Ellingham Hall, and since December 2011 at Lord Abergavenny’s Eridge Park estate in Tunbridge Wells. That puts wikileak's entire operation into question. Who does Assange work for?

So what's your gut feeling about this guy. Something really feels out of sorts. The nut is on the bolt cockeyed. His access to secret documents, selected secret documents. His sexcapade with a person that may be in the spook world. His connections to influential sorts. Can't put my finger on it, but something doesn't add up. He strikes me as an operative. His escape into obscurity will be interesting. Now he is in a behind the scenes game between multiple players. If he is CIA, he will be sent to US, then disappear with a new haircut and a new name to a So Cal suburb. If he is a freelancer, his goose is cooked. Don't know who else he might work for.

The moment Assange cowardly ran away from exposing the Russians.....He literally became their tool in the the communist war against the the most powerful Western Nation. Putin is a very cagey operator he realised he has a powerful ally in Obama and Assange was simply the icing on top of the Christmas cake. We should have taken heed when Assange was given a prestigious presenters job, as a reward on the KGB's Propaganda Media outlet Russian Television (RT).

The fact he is a top spymaster for the Russians is not in dispute.....There will be no escape for Assange, he will either hand himself over for extradition to Sweden or he will die inside his Ecuadorian Consulate prison in London.
