Earlier I asked a question that I'd like to ask more directly now - do you, the taxpayer, feel responsible for the national debt that Congress carelessly ran up?

Tasine 2010/12/17 01:34:12
Yes, the debt is every citizen's responsibility.
No, I didn't authorize the debt and all the borrowing. It is Congress' responsibility.
I feel torn. Congress is just trying to do the nation's business for us.
I don't like having the debt, but I'd feel better about paying for it if I had any say whatsoever in it.
I don't care who has to pay for it - I don't pay taxes so it doesn't bother me.

Or do you feel that Congress is the responsible party? Personally, I feel Congress made these bills and ran up the debt without needing to in order to get all the perks and pork for their voters. They never consulted me re their excesses, but I have contacted them quite a few times complaining about this issue. But I, probably like you, am always over-ridden, ridiculed, talked down to as though I am the family idiot - and they go right ahead and do what I've begged them not to do.

That being the case, I don't feel like paying for their lack of financial responsibility. I'm ready to call them on the carpet for that expense. Do you feel the same way, or do you just grit your teeth and tolerate them wasting your money doing things you abhor, treating you like dirt, then sticking you with the bill? I'm tired of being thought of as an idiot, as a servant, as one of their useful hirelings. I owe Congress NOTHING. NOT ONE SINGLE SOLITARY THING. Do you feel you owe them something? They're wining and dining on our dimes, you know, and probably laughing at you and me all the way to the bank or to the Bahamas, or wherever royalty go.

I have 4 kids, all raised without government assistance - it meant my husband and I had to both work, but that is something most families have to do. Some simply cannot work as we did due to circumstances beyond their control, and I understand that, and my disgust does NOT spread to those who are innocent bystanders having a hard time. I would like to know; however, why my family's hard earned dollars must go to pay the way for people who are on the dole simply because they are too lazy to work or they are unemployable because of lack of education, experience, proper demeanor, all sorts of issues that are WITHIN their control. My entire family is conservative and I would like to know why my dollars are taken from me to support liberal causes, for which I have no use. And I would like to know what conservative causes tax dollars are used for - liberals must hate that - if there are any conservative causes supported with tax dollars. I would like to know why my dollars must go to people who ridicule and try to destroy Christianity - I believe that is abhorrent behavior and I don't want my tax dollars going there. Why must my tax dollar go to fund the UN which I see as an abominable institution in direct conflict with the American way of life. I would like to know why my tax dollars, hard earned, are going to public schools who propagandize for the liberal wing of politics and belittle children's heritage and history. Why would I want to pay for that?

We have some truly sick people within our capital, and I am sorry they are so warped, but I see no reason to pay them to continue being that way or to drag the entire nation down because of their self-centeredness. How do you feel?

Thanks, J.L. for the awesome support. These crooks are hired TO WORK FOR US, not the other way around. They write the laws, and they above all others should obey them, but many of them don't. They act like little meddlesome kings, and they expect us to defer to them, but, J.L., none of us owes them obeisance. I'm sick of politicians' attitudes and behavior, and I am not playing their game any longer. I'm sick of being treated like an embarrassing relative everyone wishes would stay home. I've been a decent citizen all my life, and I don't deserve what DC has been dishing out. Neither do most of us deserve it. I believe the day and age of political correctness has come to its end. If we refuse to recognize it, surely it will die. I also believe Progressivism is in death throes also within the U.S. I hope you have the merriest Christmas you've ever experienced!

If you supported it, you're making me pay for your stupidity and warm and fuzzy feeling. I resent you but will die for your right to be stupid. Now it's my turn come January and in November, 2012. The job is only half complete to erase your stupidity. Even Obama is finally getting the message; when will you?

I'm sick of paying more and more.. for what.. I'm paying close to 50% after you add federal, state and city taxes.. It's ridiculous.. With 43+% of Americans not paying federal taxes, there should be a straight fair tax to all.. this is ridiculous.. What's the point of getting screwed because I've figured out how to make money.. I'm sick of paying more and more...

The debt is the fault of every voter in this country. We were busy going to work, taking care of children, day to day affairs of house/ home / maintenance that in the hours left we rested. We trusted our government servants to perform with out watching their every move. We nodded in approval when we got matching federal funds for that needed school, road, park, sewer, bridge, library. It was only pork if another state got it. Long as we got our bacon we sent the same criminals back for more. We became numb to terms like billions and trillions. Well lets put it this way, a stack of a billion hundred dollar bills would reach into the sky 3583 feet. About a low hanging cloud. Now a trillion would be about 678 MILES high. That is about three times farther out in space than the space station. The current national debt of 13.8 trillion would be a stack of 100 dollar bills reaching out into space a little more than 9368 miles. That is far enough into space to be struck by a passing asteroid. The attitude of the congress is with all these billions and trillions floating around why not throw a little to buy buddies, business, political hacks, buy a few votes , couple perks for myself , little pork back home to keep the rubes happy, little gravy for the non-workers, retirees, pensione...

Now we have 500 some of them all wanting to throw around couple billion here, couple billion there. As long as we get our pork in our state we complain , but not enough to stop it. Then lets create an agency or two couple billion more and we create more government union jobs. Every one of them looking for a lifetime pension. Everyone wanting raises every year. Like a huge bloated maggot that is eating the whole country and everything in it , the government grows.
THE FAULT IS OURS !! TIME TO LOOK OUT FOR OUR GRANDCHILDREN AND THE SURVIVAL OF THE NATION. The time has come to face the pain of constricting the government , eliminating entire agencies, return responsibility to the states and looking to do more for ourselves by ourselves. The alternative is to be the last generation to remember what it was like to be an American.

I understand exactly what you are saying. I said it myself for a lot of years. But over the years I have come to realize that it isn't true. No part of that debt is mine. I've been conservative and voted conservative my entire adult life - over 50 years. I've been politically aware, I've tried to get those not interested in politics to become interested as politics is what rules our lives whether or not we realize it. As a group, AS A GROUP, Americans have the kind of government we deserve for the very reasons you have listed. But a few million of us don't fit your description of voters and WE do not have the kind of government we deserve. As a matter of fact, even the apathetic doesn't have the government he deserves because regardless of anything the voter does or does not do, people who want to become leaders have some responsibility to tell the truth, to study bills they vote on, to give the voters the best he has to give, and he is presumed to believe in the US Constitution and to be honest enough to not destroy the nation he swears to love and represent.

I have come to believe that "people get the government they deserve" is little more than telling people the same lie over and over again until it becomes the truth, you know, the Nazi's modus operandi. Believing ...

Believing that mantra removes the onus of the politicians' criminality and places it on the shoulders of the people they swear to represent. No, I don't buy it any longer. I don't have the government I deserve. The greedy and ignorant voters have gotten me the government I do NOT deserve, BUT much as I argue with them, they are not the ones who vote on bills and authorize illegal spending. That is the job of CONGRESS. And if Congress members cannot or will not control themselves, then it is THEY who should pay the price - not the people who trusted them with power they didn't deserve.

No one deserves the government we have. You are correct they are the ones whom should pay the price. Not, merely forfeiture of the positions they now hold, also the perks they voted for themselves in perpetuity. As a group , not certain that apathy is the root of our troubles. The greater part of Americans are mostly moral, hardworking and trusting. Living with an attitude of " do under others as you would have them do unto you". Knowing ourselves not to criminals , we trusted our officials to be guide by the same principles. We trusted our newspapers and televisions to inform us , not feed us propaganda. We have been lied to, Cheated , and Suckered. Even the most politically astute among us have been deceived. Right now Harry Reid is trying to sneak through the S510 food bill , tucked into HR3082, the bill is bigger than health care in its implications and finds itself as a rider on a Military and Veterans bill. How could anyone be against military and veterans. Net neutrality failed as a law, now the FCC is going to try to avoid law and simply make it a regulation. We as a people are just beginning to awaken, with the birth of the tea party. Will we become distracted by our daily lives?, or will we take our country back and repeal the deceit. That remains to be seen.

Our politicians manufacture more enemies than we can afford to fight ! When I walk up to an ATM machine, I am not worried about communists or Arabs ! It wasn't communists or Arabs who stole my Social Security raise for the last 3 years. It wasn't communists and Arabs who cut my property values in half.

Our elected officials wasted and stole billions of our tax dollars while creating every problem that our country faces !

Now they are wasting and stealing trillions of borrowed dollars to make those same problems worse !

Greedy, little people who expect to get something from them. And some of them do. Remember the gal who gleefully announced to the world that from now on Obama was going to take care of her rent? These people not only vote - they reproduce. Illegal aliens also reproduce and if this Congress has its way they'll all be able to vote also, democrat, of course. Unfortunately totally and complete imbeciles have the right to vote, putting all of us at risk. However, Congressmen are SUPPOSED to be smarter than a hick without an education, they know better, and still they religiously spend our money to excess. Nope, it isn't MY debt. I wouldn't have run up a debt like that. It's Congress' debt. They have robbed everyone's family of the freedom from debt. They have no valid excuse. If I could sue them, I definitely would. If I could fire them, I'd do it in a heartbeat. They don't get a free ride from me just because their constituents are pitifully greedy and stupid. I didn't elect their constituents.

The problem didnt just happen now its been going on for the last 20 years. Its just that the greed grew bigger than the payouts. The debt that happen was the same debt a republican president would have had to run up. George Bush Jr. said so all economics said so. People dont realize how close America was to bankrupt. Sueing them is not the answer they commited treason and should be jailed.

I agree with most of what you say, with one exception. Yes, this has been going on since FDR started most of it during and following the depression and WWII with various social programs. Each President since him has tried to make his mark by doing something "great". However, no republican president would have insisted the entire health care system be turned on its head with horrendous cost when there was no need to do so. So it is NOT the SAME debt - it is a much larger debt. Yes, Bush had terrorists to deal with and that cost money - however, money for war is one of the things the federal government is actually responsible for. Individual health care does NOT fall within the responsibilities of the federal government. Aside from that, no President has the authority to allocate money - that is Congress' job, and theirs alone. No matter what a President wants, Congress can fund it or refuse to fund it. The most unfortunate and dangerous aspect of what we face now is that we have the most incompetent President and the most incompetent Congress probably in the history of America and together they have done enormous damage to the fabric of America. In addition to that, having such fools in power makes all of us look pretty stupid - and unfortunately many of us are - otherwise we wouldn't have these jokers in power.

It was only 10 years ago that I was given the right to vote (and vote I did). I mostly voted conservative (not necessarily Republican; they suck). You want to know whose fault it is? Anyone who can be considered a baby boomer. Yeah that's right, I said it. They have more experience voting in morons into office that push bullsh*t bills through that only serve their own interests. Those bullsh*t bills are what caused this fiasco to begin with.
