Receiving a hand up when in need is the American way... no doubt about it... we are our brothers keeper and should help those who through no fault of their own need temporary help via welfare benefits until they can get on their feet.... but there are many citizens who abuse the system and use it as a lifestyle when it is not meant as a lifestyle, but rather as a temporary means to get back on your feet .. there are alcoholics and drug abusers who abuse the system and use the funds for their next "fix" ... there are illegals abusing our welfare system as well, using it as a lifestyle even while working under the table or using 3 or more social security numbers and collecting under each one, therefore living better than many citizens, and simultaneously depleting the benefits for American citizens...
Clearly there is a lot of fraud in the welfare system, and if drug testing is a means to weed out some of that fraud.. I'm all for it.... that is not to say I do not believe when folks need a "hand up"... that we should not reach out and give it...

I'm as Conservative as anybody, but this is 100% wrong. Most testing is flawed and unreliable. I myself have tested "positive" for substances which I would never dream of ingesting. This will be disastrous, and frightfully expensive.

Many employees must take urine test on a randon basis. They also pay the taxes the welfare crowd receives. On drugs? Take a Drug test. failure to do so or fail a test and you get booted off

WELFARE.....Over five thousand years ago, Moses said to the children of Israel, "Pick up your shovels, mount your asses and camels, and I will lead you to the Promised Land."

Nearly 75 years ago, (when Welfare was introduced) Roosevelt said, "Lay down your shovels, sit on your asses, and light up a Camel, this is the Promised Land."

Today, Congress has stolen your shovel, taxed your asses, raised the price of Camels and mortgaged the Promised Land! I was so depressed last night thinking about Health Care Plans, the economy, the wars, lost jobs, savings, Social Security, retirement funds, etc... I called a Suicide Hotline. I had to press 1 for English. I was connected to a call center in Pakistan. I told them I was suicidal. They got excited and asked if I could drive a truck...

i believe if you are getting food stamps you should be eligible for them and they should be used for food to feed those who you claim needs food. I don't think anyone has the right to get them so that the cash they do get can be spent on drugs.I also don't want to be punished for those that abuse the system. Its not fair to those who are legit. Maybe the punishment should be harsher for those that abuse the system or defrauds the government.

Welfare should be an emergency system for the welfare of people in the very short term, what it should not be is a system for people to get free money for drugs from hard working tax payers.

Welfare IS temporary like unemployment. Since Clinton revised "welfare as we know it" in the '90s, welfare is limited to 60 months--5 years, and then you're out. The only people who can qualify for lifetime welfare are the physically and mentally handicapped. What people like mwg0735 are complaining about doesn't exist anymore. Not the brightest bulb in the pack, that one.

5 years free food/housing/healthcare .. hey, it's a pretty good gig if ya can get it ... that's pretty "long term" temporary if ya ask me! And please, you know as well as I do... the one's that get lost in the system continue to collect, and the others simply re-apply and it starts all over again!
P.S. No need to call people names in order to make your point .. and openly calling out another SH by name to do so is not only against SH TOS... but is not acceptable on my polls... thank you
  • my2cents MQ-Amer... 2011/09/05 07:50:29 (edited)
    my2cents
The 5-year welfare limit is a LIFETIME LIMIT, individuals cannot re-apply multiple times and collect welfare indefinitely. And I have no idea how many individuals, if any, get "lost in the system and continue to collect", and I'm positive you don't know either. I really doubt this happens much. This is just a standard talking point used by opponents of ALL social programs. The Clinton welfare reform of the 90s ended welfare as an entitlement program, requires that parents secure employment within two years of applying for benefits or they're kicked off, and 5 years of assistance is the MAXIMUM LIFETIME benefit. The number of people on welfare has dropped 58% since reform went into effect.

Anyone who considers welfare subsistence living a "pretty good gig if ya can get it" clearly has no idea what it is like to live on the poverty level.

If only what you said was reality... but it isn't....and we both know it... either way, I'm glad someone is finally at least trying to do something to weed out the fraud in the system ... starting with the illegals... IMO anyone in this country illegally is not entitled to support from its taxpayers, except maybe for a bus ride home.... in this horrid economy any monies that are in the welfare system should be used for those who truly need it, including those who have lost everything over the last months in the hurricanes, earthquake, floods, fires, etc.... we should take care of our own before we take care of other countries....

Just a reminder: Clinton "reformed" the welfare system only after being forced to do so by a Republican Congress. I didn't want anyone on here who didn't remember those times to think "Wow! Clinton was a great reformer" as those spouting the DNC's historical talking points would have us believe!
