The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists has been running its symbolic "Doomsday Clock" since 1947, when the development of nuclear weaponry persuaded them to offer the public some kind of warning. They arbitrarily change how many "minutes to midnight" to reflect how close humanity is to dooming itself. The clock has been static since 2010, when it was moved from 5 minutes to 6 minutes -- a symbolic gain for humanity. But this year they pushed it back to 5 minutes.
Their website explains, "The challenges to rid the world of nuclear weapons, harness nuclear power, and meet the nearly inexorable climate disruptions from global warming are complex and interconnected. In the face of such complex problems, it is difficult to see where the capacity lies to address these challenges ... Political processes seem wholly inadequate; the potential for nuclear weapons use in regional conflicts in the Middle East, Northeast Asia, and South Asia are alarming."
The Bulletin originally set the clock to seven minutes before midnight in 1947, and over the years it has fluctuated, at the Bulletin's discretion, between an all-time low of 2 minutes (1953) and a high of 17 minutes (1991). If you want to read the Bulletin's summary of past changes, it's all layed out on their website.

come on people
It has been known for some time the threat of nuclear weapon use has risen dramatically, and is the single largest threat to the relative peacefulness this world has clawed to achieve. Climate change is #2, IMO. The disparities that will arise for those affected most will create great conflict, there is no doubt.
I would hate for these things to become paramount to all humans only after the fact. This display is just one more way of trying to make more aware.
Highest was at the end of the democrat White House in 53 when Ike took over.
LOWEST was at the end of the 12 year run of REAGAN/BUSH.
CONSERVATIVES WIN WITH TRUTH AGAIN DEFINED.
is concerned?
Anyway you look at it - when your number`s up it`s up.
Some Americans say we have nothing to worry about, but they are counting on the conscience and good will of a people who have or will have a nuclear bomb very shortly, and they have proven that they hate us, and have threatened to use their weapon of mass destruction against us and or our allies. I say its a whole new ballgame and we are fools not to take it seriously.
As they say seeing is believing.
I grew up in a different time than you folk, it was called the Cold War because supposedly there were no armed conflicts between superpowers. I served aboard nuclear submarines, part of America's Triad that enforced the doctrine of MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction). There have been numerous times the Clock as gotten to within 1 minute of Midnight. One particular time we came within the time it takes to turn a firing key of the destruction of the Earth and all life on it. Had not the Soviet Premier picked up the red phone and called Reagan, they would've launched their ICBM's over a misunderstanding.
The Clock is not a prediction. It is an indicator of how unstable, how violent, how out of control the world is; how likely it is that some idiot will use a nuclear weapon. Ahmadamnutjob in Iran gets his hands on a nuke, you can bet your life Israel will cease to exist. We're bound by treaty to respond if they are attacked with nukes. How do you spell Armageddon?
