Many colonists learned Native American languages but in the end the Indians learned English.

Right... there was so much bread & butter on the barren reservations to which they were herded & forced to exist if they could.

Denying history doesn't make it go away... it just makes you feel better.

If you wanna be an American, learn our language. You come here and have children. You can't speak English and neither does your children. They go to school and the schools have to hire teachers that can teach your kids English. Nine times out of ten you are illegal which means you're not paying a dime in taxes and we foot the bill....

    1) People in the U.S. are not required to speak English, because that is not even the official language.

    2) Illegal immigrants pay all the taxes that legal residents do. ( http://roygermano.com/2011/02... )

28 states have English as their official language. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...

Majority of illegals don't pay any federal income tax, they are illegals with no SS numbers and are paid under the table with cash. Some may use fake ID, but that will only go so far before the feds will be checking into it.

    Grow up.

English is still not the official language of the federal government.

Read the link that I provided.

Do not reference my age. It has nothing to do with English or its use in the U.S.

I've told 60 year olds to grow up it's a mental thing that isn't limited to young people.

I read it, not a reliable source. Reality says no, I work and I've seen them being paid.

Are you just naive. "Illegals pay all the taxes that legal residents do". If you have no social security card and work under the table which is what most illegals do you certainly don't pay taxes.

No I've been in the working world long enough to know how things works. I employed someone who married an illegal person and that illegal person had been in the country for a few years and the illegal person did NOT pay taxes. They got paid in cash. This information accidently slipped out of my employees' mouth one day. There would be no reason for my employee to tell me this. Believe what you will because of some "link" you found, once you've grown up and you're out in the working world you'll be able to see it for yourself :)

Sales tax on food etc: if their state has a sales tax. We have milions of people in America who are not legal They can not get a job without a Social Security card. On all job application's now, there is a place you have to check stating that you have a right to work in America. But, there are people who will work illegal people. They get away with it by paying them cash. This is VERY illegal....

I agree. However, that was when the official position of the American government was that immigrants should be encouraged to assimilate....and immigration from any particular country was limited, to facilitate that transition. That changed with the Immigration Reform Act of 1965, which removed these quotas. Now entire villages from Central and South America have been transplanted into America, with the people retaining their native language, identity, and having little interest in becoming Americans... This was the pet project of Ted Kennedy, in his first term as a U.S. Senator...

Many of the problems we have today can be traced directly back to the Kennedy brothers...

Well, you could stop eating at Mc'D's and go elsewhere or learn how to order food in Spanish? Or I could go with you "to a Mexican restaurant in California and try to order in English" And I'll take YOU along. I'm answering vicariously through myself due to the fact that snell P doesn't accept replies or correspondence. Hope you check back!

I think the native-born white citizens of western countries are waking up the fact that their political elites have screwed them. The elites can stand around at DC cocktail parties, patting themselves on the back for being so egalitarian, internationalist, and humanitarian, while deriding the average voter as a xenophobic, racist, unsophisticated provincial..... but when the hugely negative effects of government policy the last half-century become apparent, those elites are insulated and protected, and it is the average citizen who has to deal with the fall-out.

If only we could get Americans to just learn English, that would be one step.
But Americans are so adverse to doing anything to improve their place in the world, anything that makes us stronger & more flexible, that it simply isn't worth the energy to try to get the general population to move forward. People resist change naturally. But Americans fight against it as hard as we can. We are the most stubborn, hard-headed people around.
Your scenario of having to learn five languages to live in the US is a bit absurd, wouldn't you say? Did you know that the people of Switzerland speak at minimum two languages, but most speak three before they ever enter primary school? This is true as well of just about any people who live near a border in Europe, not to mention the severe dialects within the languages themselves. Americans love to think of ourselves as being the best & the greatest at everything while rebelling against the very things that could actually make us great. It's simply senseless.
I wish I'd been taught a second or third language as a child when it was easy & quick to learn. But my parents thought like you... America is English only. But now I don't live in America & I do business with people from all over the world. Unfortunately, learning other languages is inc...&

But now I don't live in America & I do business with people from all over the world. Unfortunately, learning other languages is incredibly difficult now that I'm older & have no background in it.

Do your kids a favor: teach them to speak other languages while they're young. It's easy to learn, almost second nature. They love learning other languages. They're little sponges & soak up information quickly & easily. It will only benefit them.

Give our future generations a fighting chance in the global scene... not just the American scene. Don't hold them back. Push them & encourage them. Our children are our future & they need to be able to be a part of the world, not a part from it.

Kids, grandkids, neighbors' kids, friends' kids, etc. Encouraging children to learn learn learn & soak up as much information as possible while they're young & mailable is the best way we can love our children... because it gives them more options for a better future.

Yes, encouraging people to do positive things is really offensive, isn't it?
While you encouraging people to "stand up & protest" is somehow okay.

I find it incredibly interesting that every other developed nation's citizens speak at least two languages & second & third languages are taught as early as second & third grade in school.

One could say that it's been donkeys-years since English was spoken "properly" (as in the way it is in Oxford or Doncaster) in the US. But the fact that I see billboards oft in Spanish shows just how much worse it has become in just 30 years.

Teddy Roosevelt said this about immigrants:

"In the first place we should insist that the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equity with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace or origin. But this is predicated upon the man's becoming an American and nothing but an American. There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag, and this excludes the red flag which symbolizes all wars against liberty and civilization, just as much as it excludes any flag of a nation to which we are hostile. We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people." Theodore Roosevelt in a letter to the American Defense Society in 1919.

"Every immigrant who comes here should be required within five years to learn English or to leave the country," he said in a statement to the Kansas City Star in 1918. "English should be the only language taught or used in the public schools."

“We can have no "50-50" allegiance in this country. Either a man is an American and nothing else, or he is not an American at all.”
