Does Your Vote Matter if You Live in a Red State or a Blue State?

Every presidential election year in recent memory comes down to the same crucial swing states: Ohio, Florida, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Colorado and Nevada... give or take a state or two.

I live in California, so I don't think it really matters who I vote for because the Democrat will almost always win, due to California being a blue state. Of course, I always do vote because it's my civic responsibility, but does it really even matter if you live in an entrenched "red" (Republican) or "blue" (Democrat) state?

CNN.COM reports:
The CNN Electoral Map is CNN's best estimate of the key states that will likely decide the 2012 presidential election. The map will be updated as the campaign progresses. Use the map to predict which candidate will win each state and see who reaches 270 electoral votes first.

Not really. Only if you live in a swing state.

I do and I plan to vote.

I am non-union so I will only be voting once.

As someone from a state that can and does change red to blue and back again, yes your vote matters no matter what your state is normally considered.

Of course your vote matters. I know they cheat with the voting maching, didn't count the hanging chads, and try to obstruct voters, but if a candidate is ahead by a good margin, and people vote, I don't think they can rig the vote. Also I've heard ppl say that the pres is a puppet. To some degree, but not all. The dems always have a good economy, and the le repubs alway wreck the economy. The only time a repub had a good economy was Eisnhower, because he taxed the super rich 91% for 8 straight years.

Actually Reagan had a very could economy, despite the damage done to the economy by his predecessor Carter. Regan inherited a worse economy than Obama. But unlike Obama he was able to turn it around by 1983 and win a landslide election over Mondale 49 states to 1. He did it without blaming, bellyaching and whining like our current Marxist and Chief. So put that in your bong and toke it!

Classic right wing double talk. According to you Reagan inherited a bad economy from Carter so therefore not Reagan's fault. However you blame Obama who inhertied a far greater mess from the little monkey Bush that screwed everything up for 8 years. Too funny!

Better check your history Eisenhower faced a big recession from the end of 1957 to the end of his second term. Raising taxes in a recession solves nothing but make matters worse. Sort of like shooting yourself in the foot because you have an ingrown toenail.

History proves that Obama's handling of the recession has been the worst. He has spent more than any other POTUS while gaining less.
Please review our nations recession history and the economic recoveries and you will see Obama has FAILED. He said one term and that's all he gets.

There have been times that red states went blue and vice versa.

Here is one when a lot of red states went blue. Seems colors have changed since then.

    1984 Reagan Mondale election map

Reagan would probably won Minnesota as well but at midnight, Reagan graciously "conceded" Mondale's home state to him after the folks of the state could not call it one way or the other. Washington DC went Democrat of course for that "gubmint money."

I was a bit pissed however in 2008 when it was "called" for obama right at the minute when the polling places closed and the counting had not even yet started. That is what happens when we have a bunch of idiots governing the state of Oregon.

In my State, the two largest metropolitan centers carry the vote and the people who live in large metropolitan centers seem to be progressives (the definition of which the political "progressives" do NOT fit, what they promote is NOT even close to progress, just the opposite, actually). But that DOES leave people like me (neither Dem nor GOP) free to vote our consciences and I do.

Same goes with PA, Philly and Pittsburgh carry the weight and all the progressives do is insult the rest of the state. "clinging to God and guns" or "it's all alabama in the middle"

Division and insults get you no where. Even those in the major cities are seeing that no good has come in these last 4 years, especially in Philly where ALL taxes have been raised (sales, property, business, wage etc)

Eventually people realize the politicians have the elections fixed. People should vote for who they want. Not a list given to you. Candidates should be elected by the majority of vote. Not the number of delegates won. Eliminate the Electorial College. That's not letting the people speak. So vote or the crooks really take over.

We never really know how anybody else voted, but we always know how WE voted. If we vote and our candidate wins by one vote, we've made a difference. Conversely, if we don't vote and our candidate loses by one vote, isn't it in a real way our non-vote that decided the election? A fellow I know gave a seminar about elections, and he opened with a gigantic chart on which was written: 50% PLUS ONE VOTE. He then went on to say that that is what each Party in each election looks for. I'll be damned if it will ever happen that my candidate goes down because I didn't cast my vote.
One vote; that's all we have ( unless you're a tomb stone in a liberal cemetery ). Remember: we always get exactly the government we deserve, and that holds whether we vote or not.
